Kano Approves ₦6.9bn for Key Development Projects

In a significant move to boost infrastructure and public welfare, the Kano State Government has sanctioned the expenditure of over ₦6.9 billion for the execution of crucial projects across the state. The approval was granted during the 36th Executive Council meeting held at the Government House in Kano on Thursday, January 2, 2026.

Major Infrastructure and Compensation Projects

The State Commissioner for Information, Ibrahim Waiya, who announced the decisions, detailed the allocations. A substantial portion, over ₦859.2 million, was approved as compensation for property owners affected by the construction of a 5 km road in Tudun Wada Local Government Area. This move aims to ensure smooth project execution while addressing community concerns.

Further infrastructure approvals include ₦358.5 million for a storm water drainage project in Kano Municipal to tackle flooding. The council also earmarked ₦896 million for the reconstruction of a failed culvert in Kiru Local Government Area and ₦1.2 billion for the construction of a new box culvert. A major road project, the Yandodo-Mai-Allo Road, received approval for ₦2.6 billion.

Empowerment, Education, and Governance Initiatives

Beyond physical infrastructure, the council focused on human capital development and institutional strengthening. An allocation of ₦431.7 million was approved for the graduation and empowerment programme of the state's Entrepreneurship Institute. In the education sector, ₦285 million was set aside for the construction of new classrooms.

Other approved funds include ₦85.6 million for extending water pipelines in Gwale Local Government Area and ₦157,689,000 specifically for conducting an anti-corruption workshop, underscoring the government's commitment to transparency.

Legislative Bills and Policy Implementation

The Executive Council also took steps to forward four important bills to the Kano State House of Assembly for consideration. These proposed laws are:

  • The Kano State Local Governments Administration Bill 2025
  • The Kano State Economic Planning and Development Council Bill 2025
  • The Kano State Education Bill 2025
  • The Audu Bako College of Agriculture, Science and Technology, Dambatta Law 2025 (which seeks to rename the institution)

Furthermore, the council gave the nod for the implementation of the state's Public-Private Partnership (PPP) Policy and Manual, a framework expected to attract more investment into Kano's development.

Recognition and Partnerships

The meeting was not solely about approvals. The council also presented awards recognising outstanding achievements in various sectors including digital transformation, leadership excellence, and community development. Commissioner Waiya added that development partners used the occasion to present a skills acquisition training package and donated a 32-seater coaster bus to the state.

This comprehensive spending plan, championed by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf's administration, signals a focused attempt to accelerate development, improve living conditions, and strengthen governance systems across Kano State. The blend of infrastructure investment, empowerment schemes, and legislative action outlines a multi-faceted approach to addressing the needs of the populace.
