Kano Governor Signs ₦1.477 Trillion 2026 Budget

In a significant move to accelerate development, the Governor of Kano State, Abba Kabir Yusuf, has officially signed the amended ₦1.477 trillion 2026 Appropriation Bill into law. The governor gave his assent on Tuesday, December 30, 2025, following the bill's passage by the Kano State House of Assembly.

Budget Focused on Infrastructure and Service Delivery

Governor Yusuf described the massive financial plan as a critical instrument for driving development and ensuring efficient public service delivery across the state. He assured residents that his administration is committed to the full implementation of the budget to tangibly enhance living standards.

Speaking after the signing ceremony, Yusuf revealed that the state's 2025 budget recorded an impressive performance of over 80%, with notable achievements in capital projects and key interventions within the education and health sectors. He urged members of his executive council to demonstrate renewed dedication to the government's development agenda.

"Our focus remains on infrastructure development and effective service delivery. This amended budget reflects our determination to meet the needs of the people," the governor stated.

Assembly Increases Budget After Scrutiny

The governor provided details on the budget's journey, explaining that the Kano State House of Assembly reviewed the initial proposal of ₦1.3 trillion. After detailed scrutiny and consultations with various stakeholders, the lawmakers increased the total sum to the final figure of ₦1.477 trillion.

Governor Yusuf pledged that all appropriated funds would be used judiciously to ensure government programs have a clear and positive impact in every part of Kano State. "The amended budget captures critical infrastructural development needs, and we are fully prepared to implement it in the best interest of the people of Kano State," he added.

Capital Expenditure Takes Lion's Share

The Speaker of the Kano State House of Assembly, Ismail Falgore, highlighted the budget's structure, which underscores the government's development priorities. He noted that after extensive engagements with Ministries, Departments, Agencies (MDAs), and other stakeholders, the assembly approved a budget where capital expenditure accounts for 71%, while recurrent spending makes up the remaining 29%.

"We are confident that effective implementation of this budget will enhance socio-economic development and improve the welfare of Kano residents," Speaker Falgore said.

Plans to Honour Fallen Lawmakers Announced

In a related development, Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf announced plans by his administration to immortalize two members of the Kano State House of Assembly who died while in active service. The governor described their passing as a painful loss to the state.

He stated that the gesture is aimed at recognizing their dedicated service and sacrifice, while also reaffirming the government's commitment to strengthening democratic institutions within Kano.

This budget signing comes amid political speculation, as it was previously reported that Governor Yusuf is considering defecting from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), a move viewed as strategic ahead of the 2027 general elections.
