Kano Government Demands Immediate Action Against Former APC Chairman
The Kano State Government has officially called for the immediate arrest and prosecution of Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, the former National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC). This demand stems from comments Ganduje made regarding the security situation in Kano State that the government considers highly inflammatory.
Controversial Security Claims and Proposed Religious Police
During his recent statements, Ganduje claimed that Kano State was becoming increasingly vulnerable to bandit attacks. The former governor went further to disclose plans to recruit 12,000 personnel for a proposed religious police outfit named Khairul Nas, which he suggested would help tackle recent security challenges.
Ganduje also advised the current Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, to adopt security strategies from his previous administration to prevent further escalation of security concerns in the state.
Government's Strong Reaction and Security Concerns
Comrade Abdullahi Ibrahim Waiya, the State Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, responded strongly to Ganduje's comments during a briefing following the 34th Executive Council Meeting held on Thursday. Waiya stated that the council viewed Ganduje's remarks as "inciting, reckless, and capable of undermining" both state and federal security efforts.
The commissioner expressed particular concern about timing, noting that less than 48 hours after Ganduje's statement, suspected bandits infiltrated several border communities in Kano State. This sequence of events raised suspicions that the remarks might have been premeditated or connected to the subsequent security breaches.
Waiya emphasized that both state and federal governments had demonstrated genuine commitment to addressing security challenges affecting citizens and were working tirelessly to protect lives and property across Kano.
Ongoing Legal Troubles and Previous Cases
This is not the first time Ganduje has faced legal challenges from the Kano State Government. In mid-October, the government filed criminal charges against the former governor and his children at the State High Court concerning the Dala Inland Dry Port Limited ownership scandal.
The government alleged that Ganduje secretly transferred the state's 20 percent stake in the facility to private ownership, making his children co-owners before awarding an infrastructure contract worth more than N4 billion for the project.
The council reaffirmed its appreciation for the Federal Government and security agencies' ongoing support while calling for Ganduje's immediate investigation and arrest for allegedly attempting to create an illegal militia group.
Efforts to obtain a reaction from Ganduje's former Chief of Staff, Comrade Mohammed Garba, were unsuccessful as he did not respond to calls or text messages at the time the report was filed.
