Lagos commits to disability rights, distributes 200+ devices

The Lagos State Government has made a firm pledge to advance the rights and inclusion of persons living with disabilities. This commitment was restated during an event marking the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, organized by the Lagos State Office for Disability Affairs (LASODA).

Governor's Call for Collective Action on Inclusion

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Abimbola Salu-Hundeyin, addressed attendees on Wednesday, December 4, 2025. He emphasized that creating an inclusive society is a shared duty. Building an inclusive Lagos is not only the responsibility of the government, but also of everyone, he stated.

The Governor connected the state's efforts to global frameworks, reaffirming dedication to the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and relevant Sustainable Development Goals. He argued that inclusion is a matter of justice, not charity, and is essential for true social progress.

Addressing Barriers in Key Sectors

In her opening remarks, the General Manager of LASODA, Adenike Oyetunde-Lawal, outlined the event's focus on four critical areas: Transportation, Education, Health, and Technology. She explained that the state aims to identify and dismantle barriers within these sectors, developing sustainable solutions to improve accessibility and participation for all.

Governor Sanwo-Olu highlighted the significant demographic weight of the disability community, citing World Health Organisation data estimating they constitute about 15 per cent of the global population. He described them as a vibrant and central part of Lagos's society, not marginal to its development.

Policy and Practical Support in Focus

The administration pointed to its legislative efforts, including the Lagos State Peoples’ Law, which is recognized as one of Nigeria's most progressive disability rights laws. The government vowed to continue strengthening LASODA to implement these policies effectively.

The event culminated in a significant practical demonstration of support: the distribution of appropriate assistive devices to over 200 persons with disabilities. This initiative is designed to directly enhance their daily living and independence.

By aligning local action with international observance, Lagos State seeks to deepen understanding and galvanize broader support for the dignity, rights, and full inclusion of every citizen.
