Makinde Pledges to Address Cultural Barriers in Oyo's Environment and Waste Management
Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has declared his administration's commitment to tackling culturally entrenched behaviors that negatively impact the environment and waste management systems in the state. The governor made this announcement during the swearing-in ceremony of the newly appointed Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, Pastor Ademola Temitayo Aderinto, held at the Executive Chambers of the Governor's Office in Agodi, Ibadan.
Focus on Environmental Challenges and Public Cooperation
Governor Makinde acknowledged that his administration still has significant work to do in the areas of waste management and broader environmental issues. He assured residents that positive changes would be implemented before the end of his tenure, emphasizing the need for public cooperation to achieve these goals. The governor highlighted that cultural practices often hinder effective environmental management, and his administration is determined to address these challenges head-on.
Appointment Based on Merit and Performance
In his remarks, Governor Makinde explained that his approach to political appointments in Oyo State differs from traditional practices. He emphasized that appointments are made based on an individual's capabilities and the value they can add to the state, rather than political affiliations or recommendations from godfathers. This merit-based system, he noted, ensures that competent individuals are placed in positions where they can drive meaningful change.
Governor Makinde congratulated Pastor Aderinto on his new role and expressed confidence in his ability to perform well, given his previous experience as Special Assistant on Environment. The governor urged the new commissioner to hit the ground running, noting that although there are only 16 months left in the administration's tenure, significant progress can still be made in improving environmental and waste management practices.
Commissioner's Commitment to Environmental Issues
Following his swearing-in, Commissioner Aderinto addressed the press, outlining his priorities for the ministry. He stated that his focus would be on addressing environmental waste management, climate action, and overall environmental protection. Aderinto called on the people of Oyo State to cooperate with the government by adopting attitudes of cleanliness, environmental protection, and proper waste disposal.
The event was attended by several high-ranking officials, including the Deputy Governor of Oyo State, Barr Bayo Lawal; the Speaker of the Oyo State House of Assembly, Rt Hon Adebo Ogundoyin, represented by the Deputy Speaker, Rt Hon Mohammed Fadeyi; and other top government functionaries. Their presence underscored the collective commitment to addressing environmental challenges in the state.
