In the midst of Anambra State's intense political atmosphere, former governor and Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has appealed to Governor Charles Soludo to embrace humility and compassion in his leadership approach rather than bitterness.
Political Clash During Certificate Ceremony
The call for dignified leadership came following Governor Soludo's Certificate of Return ceremony, where the governor allegedly mocked his political opponents. Soludo reportedly described Obi as a "frustrated politician without a club" and blamed the former governor for challenges within Anambra's education system.
Speaking to journalists at the Guild of Editors in Abuja, Obi emphasized that leadership carries sacred responsibilities both to the people and to God. Rather than responding with anger to Soludo's remarks, Obi demonstrated restraint and used the moment to highlight the importance of integrity in public service.
Clarifying Election Role and Observing Irregularities
Obi took the opportunity to clarify his involvement in the recent Anambra State elections, stating emphatically that he only attended three public events where he received invitations. "I did not endorse any candidate, meet with traditional rulers, or participate in political maneuvers," Obi explained. "There was nothing I did that should have generated controversy or speculation."
Reflecting on Election Day observations, the former governor recounted witnessing voting irregularities and disruptions that could have escalated into chaos. When outsiders attempted to cast votes in his community, Obi revealed he advocated for calm and allowed the electoral process to proceed peacefully. He stressed that true leadership should be measured by courage, fairness, and respect for human dignity, especially during challenging circumstances.
Personal Reflections and Support from Traditional Leader
On a more personal note, Obi reflected on his own gubernatorial achievements in Anambra State, noting that only Jim Nwobodo and himself became governors in their forties. Having served a complete second term, Obi clarified that he holds no personal grievances against Governor Soludo. "I pray that God grants him even greater heights—if this inspires humility, compassion, and genuine service to the people," Obi stated.
Meanwhile, in a separate development, Dr. Meshack Okpala, the aspiring traditional ruler of Isulo in Orumba South Local Council, has congratulated Professor Charles Soludo on his re-election as Anambra State governor. Okpala, a Professor of Decision Sciences, during a virtual world press briefing over the weekend, praised Soludo for transforming the face and outlook of Anambra during his first term.
While celebrating Soludo's achievement of his set goals, Okpala noted that the governor's accomplishments stand as inspiring evidence of his dedication to public welfare and hard work.
