Gov Oborevwori Praises Nigerian Navy's Role in National Economy
Oborevwori hails Navy's role in national stability

Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, has publicly praised the Nigerian Navy, describing it as a fundamental force in protecting Nigeria's maritime resources and ensuring the stability of the nation's economy.

Strategic Partnership for National Security

The governor gave this commendation on Monday in Asaba while hosting the 23rd Chief of Naval Staff (CNS), Vice Admiral Idi Abbas. The CNS was on a courtesy visit to the Government House as part of his operational assessment of naval formations within Delta State.

Governor Oborevwori stated that the visit demonstrated the Navy's strong commitment to security in the Niger Delta. He emphasized that Delta State, as one of Nigeria's top oil-producing hubs, depends significantly on the Navy's vigilance to deter criminal networks that threaten the region's stability.

"Your coming shows commitment and love for our state. Delta is one of the highest oil-producing states and a major contributor to the nation," the governor remarked. He further asserted that "The Nigerian Navy has been instrumental in shaping our maritime security and protecting our national assets."

Anti-Crime Operations and Economic Impact

While acknowledging persistent security challenges, Oborevwori specifically lauded the Navy's efforts in anti-piracy operations, peacekeeping, and its collaboration with other security agencies. He noted that this synergy has been crucial in strengthening internal security and maintaining relative peace in coastal communities that are often vulnerable to crude oil theft, pipeline vandalism, and violent crime.

The governor also praised the discipline and dedication of naval officers serving in the state, recognizing their sustained presence in difficult terrain. He highlighted that their operational contributions help reassure both local residents and potential investors about the safety of the region.

New CNS Assesses Operational Readiness

In his address, Vice Admiral Idi Abbas, who assumed office on October 30, explained that the purpose of his visit was to evaluate the operational readiness of naval units in Delta State. His goal was to identify any gaps and refine strategies for the protection of critical national assets.

He described Delta as a "familiar terrain" due to his previous service in the Central Naval Command. "The purpose of my visit is to keep myself abreast of what is happening in our formations," Vice Admiral Abbas said. "Delta State hosts a lot of the nation’s critical oil and gas infrastructure, and the need to protect it cannot be overemphasised. I am here to see what we are doing right, what needs adjustment, and what challenges exist."

Delta State's Push for Industrialisation

In a related development aimed at boosting the state's economy, the Delta State government has announced plans to secure a ₦1 billion loan from the Bank of Industry (BOI). This initiative is designed to accelerate industrialisation and promote technology-enabled manufacturing within the state.

Governor Oborevwori made this disclosure at the 39th Annual General Meeting of the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN), Edo/Delta Branch, which was held in Asaba. Represented by the Deputy Director (Industries), Mr. Ocheli Jude, the governor stated that the loan scheme is part of a strategic collaboration with the BOI to provide much-needed financial support for manufacturers and medium-scale industries across Delta State.
