In a landmark development for Delta State, Governor Sheriff Oborevwori has officially launched the construction of a monumental ₦59.7 billion flyover at the historically problematic Agbor/Uromi Junction. The Agbor/Uromi Junction has stood as one of Nigeria's most notorious accident black spots on the federal highway network for generations. Daily convergence of vehicles, motorcycles, and pedestrians created a hazardous environment that resulted in frequent collisions, loss of life, and significant property damage. Governor Oborevwori declared this unacceptable during the groundbreaking ceremony, emphasizing that the project fundamentally concerns safety and economic revitalization.
"This intervention is about preserving lives and unlocking economic opportunities," the governor stated, characterizing the flyover as a critical response to a problem that had persisted without lasting resolution for far too long.
Engineering Excellence and Strategic Importance
Awarded to construction giant Julius Berger Nigeria Plc, the ambitious project is scheduled for completion within 14 months. The design incorporates a comprehensive infrastructure package including:
- A 1.3-kilometer flyover bridge along the Uromi–Agbor Highway
- Dual carriageways with two lanes in each direction
- Modern ramps and roundabouts
- Concrete drainage systems and kerbs
- Solar-powered streetlights for sustainable illumination
Beyond its engineering specifications, the corridor holds immense strategic significance as a vital economic and transportation link connecting Eastern and Western Niger Delta regions while serving as a gateway to Northern Nigeria. "Anyone traveling from Lagos to the East or from the East to the West must pass through this route. Its importance to the national economy cannot be overstated," Governor Oborevwori emphasized.
Broader Infrastructure Philosophy
The Agbor flyover represents just one component of Governor Oborevwori's comprehensive infrastructure agenda. The administration has injected ₦100 billion as a special intervention fund, allocating ₦4 billion to each of Delta State's 25 local government areas for infrastructure development alongside sector-specific investments.
In Ika South Local Government Area alone, multiple projects demonstrate this commitment:
- A ₦15.4 billion contract for 13.3 kilometers of concrete drainage systems and five kilometers of road construction addressing flooding and erosion
- Plans underway for a ₦12 billion, 15-kilometer Okpe–Abavo–Ekuku-Agbor Road to enhance regional connectivity

Former Governor Senator Ifeanyi Okowa, present at the ceremony, expressed profound satisfaction with the state's development direction. "What is happening in Delta State gives me peace. Okowa highlighted additional major interventions in Delta North, including the Ugbolu–Okpanam Road and the Aboh–Akarai concrete road and bridge across the Okiri River, as evidence of balanced, people-oriented governance.

Commissioner for Works (Highways and Urban Roads) Comrade Reuben Izeze revealed that the Agbor project represents the fifth flyover undertaken by the Oborevwori administration, joining others at PTI Junction, DSC Roundabout, Enerhen Junction, and Otovwodo Junction. He described the governor as "audacious and workaholic," noting that the scale, pace, and geographical spread of projects had effectively silenced critics.
Julius Berger's representative, Mr. Frederich Weiser, assured Deltans of quality delivery, pledging to complete the flyover on schedule with minimal disruption, drawing from the company's experience on similar projects including the Ughelli Flyover.
