Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State has announced sweeping new security measures requiring all companies operating in the state to immediately register and document their foreign employees.
Immediate Registration of Foreign Workers
The directive came during a strategic security meeting held in Iperu, Ikenne Local Government Area, where the governor met with heads of security agencies. Governor Abiodun revealed that approximately 70 foreigners, predominantly from Niger Republic, Sudan, and Chad, had been arrested in recent days after failing to provide satisfactory explanations for their presence in the state.
"Law enforcement agencies have arrested within the last three to four days about 70 persons from Chad and Sudan who cannot even speak English and cannot explain what they are doing here," the governor stated. He emphasized that these individuals would be processed through the Nigeria Immigration Service while calling on non-indigene communities to increase vigilance.
Enhanced Security Architecture
Governor Abiodun assured residents that the state's security framework has been significantly strengthened. Security operations are now concentrating on several key areas identified as potential hideouts for criminal elements.
The security focus will include:
- Illegal mining sites across the state
- Game reserves and forest areas
- Communities with high foreign national presence
Authorities plan to systematically flush out criminal elements occupying these vulnerable locations, according to the governor's announcement.
Scavengers Identified as Security Threat
In a significant development, the governor expressed serious concerns about scavengers operating throughout Ogun State, declaring their activities now constitute a substantial security threat.
"We discussed the issue of scavengers who have become more of a threat. Law enforcement agencies will pay particular attention to them," Abiodun confirmed. He added that the government plans to engage scavenger groups directly to ensure they are not being used as conduits for criminal activities within the state.
