Southern Governors Forge Unified Front Against Insecurity
Governors from Southern Nigeria have taken a decisive step towards tackling the region's security challenges by agreeing to establish a dedicated zonal security fund. This landmark decision was reached during a joint meeting between the Southern Governors' Forum and the Southern Nigeria Traditional Rulers' Council held in Iperu-Remo, Ogun State, on Wednesday, November 27, 2025.
A Multi-Pronged Security Strategy
The communiqué, read by the Forum Chairman and Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, outlined a comprehensive plan. Member states will contribute to a dedicated security pool designed to support regional security operations and enhance capacity building. Furthermore, the governors agreed to institutionalize a monthly Zonal Security Coordination Meeting involving Security Advisers from across the region to ensure continuous collaboration.
To modernize their approach, the forum approved a sophisticated intelligence-sharing framework. This system will be backed by modern communication technologies, real-time surveillance systems, and interoperable equipment, enabling a swift and coordinated response to security threats that cross state lines.
Reaffirming State Police and Grassroots Collaboration
In a strong reaffirmation of their longstanding position, the governors reiterated their call for the creation of state police, describing it as a constitutional imperative. They pointed to the successes already recorded by various community-based and regional security initiatives as evidence of its necessity.
The strategy also heavily involves grassroots structures. The communiqué encouraged states to provide direct financial and operational support to traditional councils, empowering them to play a more effective role in local security and peacebuilding. The operations of regional and local security outfits, including hunters' associations, will also be enhanced with better equipment and logistics.
To address root causes, the Forum urged states to work with traditional rulers to regulate land allocation and curb illegal mining activities, which were identified as major sources of ecological and security challenges.
Unity and Confidence in National Leadership
Despite attempts to create division, the Southern Governors' Forum pledged to continue speaking with one voice. In a show of unity and support for the federal government, the forum passed a vote of confidence in President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, commending his leadership and commitment to national stability and reforms. They also praised the President for the recent successful rescue operations of kidnapped victims in parts of the country.
The meeting concluded with a firm reaffirmation of the Forum's commitment to national unity, stronger regional cooperation, and the deepening of an inclusive and secure federation for all Nigerians.
