Former Anambra Governor Willie Obiano's Death Rumours Spark Uncertainty
Uncertainty as ex-Anambra gov Obiano reportedly dies

Confusion and uncertainty have gripped Nigeria's political landscape following unconfirmed reports about the death of former Anambra State governor, Willie Obiano, in London.

The Unconfirmed Reports

According to sources, the former governor allegedly passed away due to severe heart failure and complications arising from urinary cancer. The news, which emerged on November 14, 2025, has yet to receive official confirmation from Obiano's family or close associates.

When contacted for clarification, Obiano's Personal Publicist, Ozo Tony Nezianya, expressed unawareness of such developments. "I can't confirm to you; I'm not aware of such news," Nezianya stated, adding to the growing uncertainty surrounding the former governor's condition.

Political Legacy and Controversies

Willie Obiano served as Anambra State governor from 2014 until March 17, 2022, when he handed over power to Professor Chukwuma Soludo, who like Obiano, belongs to the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA).

However, weeks after leaving office, Obiano faced serious allegations of financial misconduct. His family members and wife reportedly pointed fingers at his successor as being responsible for his political troubles.

The political tension escalated to the point where Obiano's loyalists vowed to support either the All Progressives Congress (APC) or Young Progressives Party (YPP) candidate during the November 8, 2025 governorship election.

Ongoing Legal Battles

At the time of his reported death, Obiano was facing trial by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) over an alleged N4 billion money laundering case. The EFCC had brought nine-count charges against the former governor before Justice Mohammed Umar.

During court proceedings, the anti-graft agency accused Obiano of mismanaging approximately N4 billion belonging to Anambra State. In a hearing on October 7, 2024, the Commission presented two witnesses, including Ugochukwu Otubelu, a former commercial bank employee.

Otubelu testified that he handled the security vote account during Obiano's administration, revealing that the account had two signatories: former Principal Secretary Willy Nwokoye and Accountant Theophilus Nweze. The witness claimed he interacted with both men daily or weekly while processing their transactions.

The case was scheduled to continue at the Federal High Court in Abuja on November 25, with Otubelu expected to return to court.

Personal Background

Born on August 8, 1955, Willie Obiano hailed from Aguleri in Anambra East Local Government Area. He was married to Dr. Mrs. Ebelechukwu Virginia Obiano, who originates from Ogbunike in Oyi Local Government Area of the state.

As the nation awaits official confirmation about Obiano's health status, political observers continue to monitor developments, recognizing the significant impact this news could have on Anambra's political landscape and the ongoing EFCC case.
