Borno Governor Reacts to Military Airstrike in Border Market, Confirms Closure
Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum has officially labeled Jilli market as a notorious hub allegedly utilized by insurgents and their logistics suppliers. This declaration follows a deadly military airstrike on Saturday, April 11, 2026, which reportedly resulted in the deaths of 56 individuals and left 14 others seriously injured.
Details of the Tragic Incident and Governor's Statement
The airstrike occurred during a military operation targeting Boko Haram insurgents in the border area between Borno and Yobe states. Governor Zulum, through a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Media, Dauda Iliya, on Sunday, April 12, 2026, stated categorically that the Borno State Government had closed both Jilli and Gazabure markets five years prior to the incident.
"I have been properly briefed on the airstrike carried out by the Air Component of Operation Hadin Kai on Jilli market, a border town between Borno and Yobe states. Let me state categorically that the Borno State Government closed Jilli and Gazabure markets five years ago," Zulum emphasized.
Collaboration and Security Measures
The governor highlighted his ongoing close consultation with the Yobe State government and the military hierarchy regarding the matter. He assured that his administration maintains rigorous coordination with military and other security agencies before resettling any community or reopening markets, particularly in regions affected by insurgency.
Zulum reiterated his administration's unwavering commitment to safeguarding law-abiding citizens and sustaining collaborative efforts with security agencies to restore lasting peace and stability across Borno State. He urged residents to remain vigilant and cooperate by providing credible information to aid ongoing military operations.
Political Reactions and Broader Context
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar described the military airstrike as a tragic failure, highlighting the collateral damage in Nigeria's fight against terrorism. The chieftain of the African Democratic Congress called for urgent action to uphold the nation's duty of protecting its citizens.
Meanwhile, in a separate development, the Air Component of Joint Task Force Operation HADIN KAI successfully carried out a precision strike against a terrorist enclave in Sambisa Forest, as confirmed by Nigerian Air Force spokesperson Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame.
The incident at Jilli market raises urgent questions about military operations in conflict zones, balancing security objectives with civilian safety. Governor Zulum's statements underscore the complex challenges faced in northeastern Nigeria, where insurgent activities continue to threaten peace and stability.
