A faction within the Coalition of South East Youth Leaders (COSEYL), identified as the Reform Caucus, has announced the immediate suspension of one of its prominent leaders, Goodluck Ibem. This decisive action follows allegations that Ibem issued an unauthorized and defamatory statement targeting the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, without obtaining consent from the organization's executive council.
Group Condemns Rogue Action and Distances Itself
During a press briefing held on Friday, members of the Reform Caucus strongly condemned Ibem's actions, emphasizing that the controversial statement did not reflect the official position of COSEYL. The caucus insisted that the organization should not be associated with what they described as a "rogue action," asserting that COSEYL's reputation is not a commodity to be exploited for personal or political gain.
The group stated: "COSEYL is not for sale. Our name is not a commodity to be hawked in corridors of mischief." They further accused Ibem of repeatedly misusing the organization's platform to advance his personal and political agendas, undermining the collective integrity of the youth coalition.
Dismissal of Petition Against Deputy Speaker
In addition to addressing the unauthorized statement, the Reform Caucus criticized a petition reportedly submitted by Ibem to the Legal Practitioners Disciplinary Committee (LPDC). This petition questioned aspects of Deputy Speaker Kalu's professional background, but the caucus dismissed it as lacking substantive merit and raised jurisdictional concerns.
The caucus argued that the allegations in the petition pertained to events that allegedly occurred before Kalu was called to the Nigerian Bar in September 2011. According to their interpretation of the Legal Practitioners Act, the LPDC's authority is limited to investigating the conduct of practicing lawyers in matters directly connected to the practice of law, potentially placing these claims outside its purview.

The Reform Caucus also challenged specific allegations within the petition, including claims that Kalu simultaneously attended the Nigerian Law School while participating in the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) programme. The group contended that existing laws do not explicitly prohibit such an overlap, thereby weakening the petition's foundation.
Furthermore, the caucus highlighted that the petition itself acknowledged Kalu's admission to the Bar and included his Call to Bar certificate as evidence. They argued that this inclusion contradicted any assertions questioning his legal status and rejected allegations of fraud, stressing that such serious claims require a high standard of proof that the petition materials failed to meet.
Apology and Reaffirmation of Support
Led by President Prince Ogbu Emmanuel, Secretary Barrister Somto Nwokoye, and Publicity Secretary Nellobi Bright, the Reform Caucus issued a formal apology to Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu. They expressed regret for the "embarrassment, distress, and reputational damage" caused by Ibem's unauthorized statement and reaffirmed their support for Kalu, describing him as a prominent Igbo political figure who holds a significant leadership role in the National Assembly.
The caucus emphasized: "Our objective is to support leaders who contribute positively to the development of the South-East region, rather than promote baseless allegations." They clarified that Ibem's suspension takes immediate effect and warned that any future statements issued in the name of COSEYL by him would be considered invalid and unauthorized.

This incident occurs against the backdrop of Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu's active engagement in South-East politics. Previously, Kalu has advocated for a strategic alliance between the South-East and South-West regions as a viable pathway to achieving an Igbo presidency in Nigeria.
