A Nigerian woman has publicly honoured her father for challenging deep-seated patriarchal norms in their Urhobo community by cherishing his daughters as much as his sons.
A Father's Defiance Against Tradition
Confidence Maye Utomi took to Facebook on Tuesday, December 16, 2025, to share a heartfelt tribute alongside a photograph with her sisters. She recounted how her father, Mr. Roland, consistently defied cultural pressure that traditionally undervalues female children in Urhobo land.
She explained that in their culture, a man whose wife has not borne a male child faces significant stigma. "The family of the man would call their son and advise him to take a second wife," Confidence wrote, noting that this practice remains strong despite modern influences.
Love Silencing Generational Bias
Confidence revealed that after her mother gave birth to three girls before having boys, people reminded her father that girl children are not 'rated'. However, Mr. Roland chose to ignore the culture, noise, and stereotypes.
"He [spoke] boldly, and [taught us] to never feel less because of our gender," she stated. To him, his daughters were not just girls; they were his pride, his joy, and his answered prayers.
Even after the arrival of three boys, the father's attitude never changed. The same way his sons are valued is the same way his daughters are valued. Confidence emphasized that her father can go to any length to fulfill their requests, demonstrating his unwavering commitment.
An Empowering Legacy
The result of this paternal love and defiance is a powerful legacy of confidence and self-worth. "Today, we stand confident, loved, and supported because one man decided to rewrite a narrative," Confidence declared.
Her post serves as a powerful testament that a father's love can silence generations of bias and that true value is never determined by gender. She concluded with a direct message of gratitude: "Thank you, Daddy, for proving that value is not determined by gender."
