NSITF Advocates for Policy Support to Empower Women in Nigeria

The Nigeria Social Insurance Trust Fund (NSITF) has called for robust policy support to advance women's empowerment, emphasizing its critical role as both an economic and social necessity. This appeal was made during the 2026 International Women's Day (IWD) commemoration organized by the Trade Union Congress Women Commission in Abuja.

Economic and Social Imperatives Highlighted

Oluwaseun Faleye, the Managing Director and Chief Executive of NSITF, served as the special guest of honour at the event. He described the theme, 'Empowering Women: The Path to Equal Rights and Social Justice,' as timely and significant. Faleye stressed that empowering women with equal opportunities, fair wages, safe working conditions, and access to social protection strengthens societies and builds more resilient economies.

Faleye stated: "When women are empowered with equal opportunities, fair wages, safe working conditions, and access to social protection, societies become stronger and economies grow more resilient."

Challenges and Commitments Acknowledged

While commending the Women's Commission for its consistent advocacy within the labour movement, Faleye lamented that many Nigerian women still face barriers limiting their access to opportunities. He affirmed NSITF's commitment to promoting safe workplaces for women and all workers, urging stakeholders to reaffirm their dedication to building a future where every woman can work safely, earn fairly, and participate fully in decision-making processes.

Support from Labour and International Bodies

Festus Osifo, President-General of the Trade Union Congress, echoed Faleye's sentiments, noting women's pivotal contributions to workplaces, communities, and national progress. He highlighted the TUC's bold steps to end inequalities and institutionalize gender inclusion.

Dr. Vanessa Phala Moyo, Country Director for the International Labour Organisation (ILO) in Nigeria, added that IWD provides an annual opportunity to recognize women's achievements, confront persistent inequalities, and reaffirm collective commitment to social justice. She called attention to structural barriers hindering women's full enjoyment of rights in the world of work.

Award Recognition for Leadership

During the event, Faleye was honoured with the TUC Award of Excellence for his visionary leadership and contributions to women's development and gender equity. Esther Saabe Ahmadu, Chairperson of the TUC Nigeria Women Commission, presented the award, citing Faleye's integrity, outstanding service, and unwavering support for advancing gender equality and decent work.

Ahmadu remarked: "This award is in appreciation of Faleye's unwavering support and strong commitment to advancing gender equality, promoting decent work, and protecting the rights and dignity of women in the world of work."

Dedication and Future Commitments

Upon receiving the award, Faleye expressed gratitude to the TUC Women's Commission and dedicated it to the hard-working staff of NSITF. He reiterated his commitment to advancing gender inclusiveness, equality, and the promotion of safe and healthy workplaces for all workers.

This event underscores the ongoing efforts to address gender disparities in Nigeria, with key stakeholders advocating for policy reforms to empower women and foster social justice across the nation.
