Sokoto Governor's Wife Advocates for Enhanced Grassroots Women Support

Fatima Aliyu, the wife of the Sokoto State Governor, has organized a crucial stakeholders' meeting to develop more effective methods for ensuring that women at the grassroots level gain greater access to various government interventions and support programs. This initiative aims to address the disparities in benefit distribution and enhance the impact of state-led efforts on rural communities.

Refining Strategies for Inclusive Support

During the meeting, the First Lady emphasized that the gathering was specifically designed to fine-tune existing strategies, ensuring that grassroots women fully participate in and benefit from the numerous government support initiatives implemented across Sokoto State. She highlighted that since the beginning of her husband's administration, her office has introduced multiple intervention programs targeted at improving the lives of women throughout the region.

"We have realized that rural women benefit less from some of these initiatives, hence the need to review our approach and ensure that support reaches them more effectively," Mrs. Aliyu stated. "Women at the grassroots often face enormous challenges; therefore, there is a need for collective responsibility to ensure that the support meant for them gets to them efficiently."

Comprehensive Assistance and Empowerment Programs

Mrs. Aliyu further disclosed that her office has distributed various food items and cash assistance to widows, elderly women, and other vulnerable groups across the state to cushion the effects of economic hardship and provide relief to those in need. Additionally, hundreds of women farmers have received training in modern farming techniques and financial support to start or expand their agricultural businesses.

Under the administration's poverty reduction program, many unemployed women have been trained in various trades, including:

  • Knitting and textile production
  • Baking and culinary arts
  • Pomade and perfume manufacturing
  • Hairdressing and beauty services

Collaborative Efforts and Acknowledgment

The stakeholders' meeting brought together key actors whose collaboration is essential for achieving the desired outcomes in women's empowerment. Mrs. Aliyu acknowledged the efforts of Governor Ahmed Aliyu for his continued support in improving the welfare of the state's residents. She noted that the current administration has introduced numerous programs aimed at supporting the needy, persons with disabilities, and internally displaced persons to make their lives more meaningful and dignified.

Thousands of women have received grants under the SOSMEDA initiative to start and expand their businesses, creating opportunities for self-reliance and economic independence, particularly for women and youths. Skills acquisition programs implemented through SOSMEDA, the Ministry of Women and Children Affairs, and the Ministry for Local Government Affairs have trained thousands of unemployed youths and women in various trades and vocations.

Endorsement from Women Leaders

Earlier in the meeting, the State APC Women Leader, Rabi Tudun Wada, commended the governor's wife for initiating various support programs aimed at improving the lives of women across Sokoto. She called on women leaders across the 23 local councils to support government policies and programs by ensuring that grassroots women enjoy the dividends of democracy and equitable resource distribution.
