Armed bandits have unleashed a wave of violence across communities in Niger State's Mashegu Local Government Area, resulting in the tragic deaths of 16 vigilante members and the abduction of 42 residents in coordinated attacks.
Timeline of Terror: Multiple Communities Targeted
The brutal attacks occurred between Sunday, November 9 and Thursday, November 13, 2025, creating widespread panic and forcing residents to flee their homes. According to local sources who spoke with Daily Trust, the violence began when bandits stormed Dutsen Magaji village on Sunday, abducting 22 people in their initial assault.
When community vigilantes pursued the attackers, a fierce gun battle erupted that claimed the lives of three vigilante members. Five additional people sustained serious injuries and are currently receiving hospital treatment.
Deadly Ambush During Morning Prayers
The situation escalated dramatically on Thursday, November 13, when the bandits returned at dawn and invaded Magama village during early morning prayers. A resident who requested anonymity described the terrifying scene: "They surrounded the mosque while people were praying and abducted more than 20 people."
As vigilantes pursued the retreating attackers, they fell into a carefully laid ambush. The bandits opened fire, killing 13 vigilantes in the confrontation and injuring several others in what became the deadliest single incident during this violent period.
Community Exodus and Official Response
The repeated attacks have triggered mass displacement throughout the affected region. Residents reported that numerous communities have been completely deserted since Monday, with villagers fleeing to safer locations including Mashegu, Kawo-Mashegu, and Manigi.
Among the abandoned villages are Dutsen Magaji, Borin-Aiki, Gidan Ruwa, and Magama, where normal community life has been completely disrupted by the security crisis.
Isah Ibrahim Bokuta, Press Secretary to the chairman of Mashegu LGA, confirmed the killings in an official statement. He praised the fallen vigilantes as heroes who sacrificed their lives defending their communities, emphasizing that the local government recognizes their bravery and selfless commitment to maintaining security in the area.
