16-year-old Boko Haram family member surrenders in Borno

A 16-year-old family member of a suspected Boko Haram terrorist has surrendered to troops of Operation Hadin Kai in Pulka, Gwoza Local Government Area of Borno State. The teenager, identified as Isa Umaru, turned himself in to soldiers of the 192 Battalion (Motorised) stationed at the Forward Operating Base (FOB) Pulka at approximately 8:45 a.m. on June 14, 2026.

Escape from Terrorist Enclave

A military source disclosed that Umaru escaped from a terrorist hideout at Chikide in the Mandara Mountains and voluntarily presented himself to the troops. During initial screening, he revealed that sustained military operations against insurgent strongholds, combined with acute shortages of basic necessities within the camp, had caused disarray among the fighters, prompting his decision to flee.

Items Found in Possession

Items recovered from the teenager included 12 pieces of detergent and a wristwatch. The source added that Umaru has been properly screened, documented, and is currently in military custody pending further action in line with established procedures.

Context of Surrender

This surrender is the latest in a series of defections linked to ongoing counter-insurgency efforts by Operation Hadin Kai, aimed at degrading terrorist capabilities and encouraging disengagement from insurgent groups in the North-East region. Military authorities stated that while the security situation across the theatre remains calm, it is still unpredictable. Troops continue to maintain high morale and operational effectiveness.
