In a significant blow to criminal elements terrorizing the North-West, the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has executed a powerful series of airstrikes, neutralizing at least 50 bandits across Katsina and Kano states. The coordinated air operation, confirmed by security officials on Monday, January 20, 2026, marks a critical success in the ongoing fight against insecurity in the region.
Intelligence-Driven Strikes Target Notorious Faction
The aerial assaults specifically targeted bandit enclaves around the Musawa, Matazu, and Danmusa local government areas of Katsina State, as well as the Tsanyawa axis in neighboring Kano State. According to the Katsina State Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Nasiru Mu’azu Danmusa, the operation was highly intelligence-driven.
Commissioner Danmusa revealed that crucial information provided by repentant bandits played a key role in the mission's success. He stated that the military acted on credible intelligence, which enabled the Air Force to precisely locate and engage the targets.
The neutralized bandits were identified as foot soldiers loyal to a notorious kingpin known as Baidu, who has been a major obstacle to peace efforts in the Danmusa area and other parts of Katsina. The commissioner explained that the criminals were struck around Matazu Local Government Area while they were returning from attacks on communities in Tsanyawa, Kano State.
Government Vows Sustained Offensive Despite Peace Talks
While peace initiatives continue in some areas, the Katsina government has made it clear that security operations will not relent. Commissioner Danmusa emphasized that the state remains fully committed to combating banditry, stating that those who undermine the peace process will be confronted.
He attributed the recent operational successes to improved intelligence gathering, enhanced collaboration between security agencies in Kano and Katsina, and vital support from local communities. "With intelligence sharing and synergy between security personnel in both Kano and Katsina states, as well as support from communities and repentant bandits, we are recording successful operations across the two states," Danmusa affirmed.
Residents Confirm Impact, Call for Reconstruction
Eyewitnesses in the affected communities, who spoke anonymously for security reasons, confirmed the airstrikes' effectiveness. They reported that several armed men were killed while allegedly planning further attacks on farmlands near villages between Matazu and Danmusa.
Residents also noted that weapons and other items belonging to the bandits were recovered from the scene. While welcoming the decisive military action, community members urged both state and federal governments to prioritize the reconstruction of villages devastated by years of bandit violence.
They stressed that rebuilding infrastructure, alongside comprehensive rehabilitation, reintegration, and empowerment programs for affected communities and former bandits, is essential for achieving lasting peace in the region.
The Nigerian Air Force has not yet released an official statement regarding this specific operation. However, security sources indicate that follow-up operations are ongoing in the area to consolidate the gains and pursue fleeing remnants of the criminal gangs.
