Eighty Abducted Christians in Kaduna Reunite with Families After Escape from Captivity

In a significant development in the ongoing security crisis in Kaduna State, eighty of the 177 worshippers abducted from three churches in Kurmin Wali village, Kajuru Local Government Area, in January 2026, have managed to escape from captivity and have been reunited with their families. This news brings a glimmer of hope amidst the persistent threat of banditry in the region.

Details of the Escape and Current Situation

The village Head of Kurmin Wali, Ishaku Dan’azumi, disclosed this information on Sunday, providing a detailed account of the events. According to Dan’azumi, the escape occurred in two phases. Initially, eleven of the victims managed to flee shortly after the abduction took place on January 18. More recently, the remaining eighty worshippers successfully escaped from their captors, bringing the total number of escapees to ninety-one individuals.

The escapees initially sought refuge in neighbouring communities before making their way back home to Kurmin Wali, where they have now been reunited with their loved ones. However, the situation remains dire, as Dan’azumi confirmed that eighty-six worshippers are still being held by the bandits, believed to be hidden in a forest location. This highlights the ongoing captivity and suffering endured by many families in the area.

Appeal for Government Action and Community Concerns

Dan’azumi expressed deep concern over attempts by some individuals to politicise the tragedy, emphasising that the families of the victims continue to suffer from severe trauma and distress. He made a heartfelt appeal to the government and the military, urging them to intensify their efforts to secure the release of those still in captivity.

Furthermore, he highlighted the broader security challenges faced by the community, noting that Kurmin Wali and surrounding villages have been living under persistent fear of bandit attacks and kidnappings. This environment of insecurity has disrupted daily life and instilled a sense of vulnerability among residents.

Police Response and Ongoing Investigations

In response to the incident, the Kaduna State Police Public Relations Officer, Mansir Hassan, stated that the command is actively working on the case. He mentioned that the police will issue a comprehensive report on the abduction and escape, which is expected to provide further details and insights into the security operations and measures being taken.

This development underscores the critical need for enhanced security measures and support for affected communities in Kaduna State, as efforts continue to address the menace of banditry and ensure the safety of all citizens.
