Bandits on Monday night abducted a High Court judge in Kebbi State, according to police sources. The judge, Justice Ibrahim Bello, was taken from his residence in the state capital, Birnin Kebbi, around 10 p.m. The assailants reportedly stormed the judge's home, overpowered security guards, and whisked him away.
Police Confirm Abduction
Police spokesman DSP Jamilu Abubakar confirmed the incident, stating that a search operation has been launched. “We are working to ensure the safe return of the judge and apprehend the perpetrators,” Abubakar said. He added that the police have deployed at least 50 personnel to the area and established checkpoints along major routes.
Community Reaction
The abduction has sparked fear among residents of Birnin Kebbi. A community leader, Alhaji Umar Garba, called on security agencies to intensify efforts. “This is unacceptable. Our judges are targets, and we demand immediate action,” Garba said. The state government condemned the attack and urged calm, promising to cooperate with security forces.
Rising Insecurity in Northwest
The incident is the latest in a series of abductions targeting prominent individuals in northwestern Nigeria. Bandit groups have been active in the region, often demanding ransom. In recent months, several traditional rulers and political figures have been kidnapped. Analysts attribute the trend to inadequate security infrastructure and poverty.
Search Operation Ongoing
Security forces are combing nearby forests and villages for the judge. A military source confirmed that troops have been mobilized from neighboring Sokoto and Zamfara states. “We are optimistic that the judge will be found safe,” the source said. The Nigerian Bar Association has called for the judge’s immediate release, warning that such attacks undermine the judiciary.
