Bandits Attack Lata Nna, Kill Woman and Kidnap Another
Bandits have struck again in Kwara State, raiding the Lata Nna community in Patigi Local Government Area in the early hours of Sunday, August 2, 2026. During the attack, a woman was killed and a resident was taken away by the heavily armed assailants, who fired shots sporadically to disperse the community.
The attackers arrived at the village on Sunday morning and began shooting indiscriminately, forcing residents to run for their lives. A significant number of villagers escaped into the surrounding bushes to avoid being hit, while some others were not so lucky and suffered injuries before the bandits withdrew.
Security Failure Angers Residents
The latest assault has reignited complaints about the poor state of security in Patigi and its neighbouring communities. Residents, who spoke with journalists after the attack, expressed disappointment over the failure of security forces to intervene or prevent the incident, despite earlier warnings about the presence of suspicious armed groups in the area.
According to community sources, this is not the first time the village has been targeted. The persistent insecurity has made life unbearable, and many residents now live in constant fear of another attack. The authorities, however, have yet to address these concerns publicly, leaving the community in a state of uncertainty.
Woman Shot While Fetching Firewood
One of the victims, an unidentified woman, was killed while she was gathering firewood behind the village. A resident told reporters that the woman was caught in the line of fire when the bandits began their assault. Her remains have been recovered and deposited at a nearby location as the community mourns her death.
The killing of the woman has further heightened tensions in the area, with some residents threatening to carry out a peaceful protest if the government does not take decisive action against the bandits. However, no such protest has been confirmed at the time of this report.
Ransom Demand in Previous Abduction
Sunday’s attack came barely 24 hours after another resident of Lata Nna, Mohammed Abubakar Ndakpada Lata, was abducted by suspected bandits. He was captured while returning from his farm on Saturday. Reports indicate that his abductors have demanded N100 million for his release, a sum that many consider outrageous and unaffordable for the family.
The abduction and the subsequent raid suggest a coordinated effort by criminal gangs to destabilise the community. It also highlights the vulnerability of rural dwellers who lack modern security infrastructure and are often left to fend for themselves against well-armed criminals.
No Official Response Yet
As of the time of filing this report, the Kwara State Police Command and other security agencies have not issued an official statement on the incident. The inability of the authorities to promptly confirm or respond to the attack has generated criticism from civil society groups and community leaders, who are demanding a full-scale investigation and the deployment of additional security personnel.
The situation in Lata Nna mirrors a broader security crisis affecting many parts of Kwara State and the North-Central region. Farmers are increasingly unable to work on their lands, and rural communities are becoming deserted as bandits extend their operations from the North-West to other parts of Nigeria.
Residents are now appealing to the federal and state governments to come to their aid. They believe that without urgent intervention, the community will continue to suffer from the menace of banditry, as criminals operate with impunity and no one is held accountable.
The attack on Lata Nna is a grim reminder of the growing insecurity in Nigeria’s rural heartland, where lives are lost and families are torn apart on a regular basis. Until security agencies rise to the challenge, communities like Lata Nna will remain at the mercy of armed bandits.
