Harvest Season Turns Deadly in Kwara Community
Suspected bandits have launched a brutal attack on Bokungi community in Edu Local Government Area of Kwara State, resulting in the death of two rice farmers and the abduction of a teenage boy. The violent incident occurred during what should have been a celebratory harvest period for the farming community.
Timeline of the Attack
The assault took place between 6:30 pm and 7:00 pm on Wednesday, November 19, 2025, as the farmers were working on their rice farmlands. According to community sources, the victims had returned to their farmlands to retrieve harvested rice when the armed bandits struck without warning.
Initial reports indicate that the attackers initially accosted four individuals, including a vigilante operative who was part of the community's security efforts. The bandits showed no mercy, killing two victims immediately at the scene while inflicting severe injuries on a third person.
Community Security Compromised
In a significant blow to local security efforts, the assailants confiscated a Bajaj motorcycle that had recently been distributed to vigilantes by the local government chairman. This motorcycle was specifically provided to aid security patrols in the area, making its theft particularly damaging to future protection efforts.
The third victim suffered severe fractures and multiple machete wounds during the attack, adding to the growing list of casualties from this devastating incident. Medical personnel are currently attending to the injured individual.
Community in Panic as Harvest Season Ends in Tragedy
The Bokungi community has been thrown into a state of panic and mourning following the attack. What should have been a successful conclusion to the harvest season has instead become a nightmare for the victims' families and the entire farming community.
This incident underscores the growing vulnerability of farmers and residents in rural Kwara communities. These agricultural workers form the backbone of the state's food production system yet remain exposed to criminal elements who target remote farming areas.
Local authorities have been notified of the attack and are expected to launch investigations into the security breach. Community leaders are calling for enhanced security measures to protect farmers, especially during critical periods like harvest season when they are most vulnerable.
