Bandits Kill Three, Abduct Catholic Priest and 10 Others in Kaduna Community Raid
Suspected bandits launched a deadly early morning attack on Karku community in Kauru Local Government Area of Kaduna State, resulting in the tragic death of three residents and the abduction of a Catholic priest alongside ten other villagers. The incident, which occurred in the early hours of Saturday, February 7, 2026, has sent shockwaves through the region, highlighting the persistent security challenges in Northern Nigeria.
Details of the Attack and Victims
The assault took place around 3:20 AM when heavily armed terrorists stormed the community, firing sporadically before whisking away their victims. Among those kidnapped was Rev. Fr. Nathaniel Asuwaye, the parish priest of Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Karku. The attackers invaded the priest's residence and nearby homes, creating an atmosphere of fear and chaos among residents.
The three individuals killed in the attack have been identified as Jacob Dan'azumi, Maitala Kaura, and Alhaji Kusari. Their deaths add to the grim toll of violence in the area, with the abduction of Fr. Asuwaye and the ten other villagers compounding the tragedy.
Official Confirmation and Reactions
The Catholic Archdiocese of Kafanchan confirmed the abduction through a statement released by its Chancellor, Jacob Shanet. In the statement, Shanet expressed deep sorrow and called for prayers from Christians and people of goodwill for the safe release of the victims. He emphasized the need for spiritual support during this difficult time, urging all to pray for Fr. Nathaniel and the other abducted persons, as well as for the repose of the souls of those killed.
Reacting to the incident, Rev. Joseph Hayab, Chairman of the Northern Christian Association of Nigeria, described the attack as a stark reminder of the worsening security situation in the region. He lamented that the kidnapping of Christian priests and innocent citizens has become unbearable, despite ongoing efforts to curb such evils.
Security Response and Ongoing Efforts
In response to the attack, security sources at the Kaduna State Police Command reported that a joint team of military and police forces has engaged the attackers in gun battles in the Kauru axis. The sources indicated that the bandits are believed to still be in the area, and with divine assistance, there is hope for their apprehension. This development underscores the urgent need for enhanced security measures to protect vulnerable communities from such brazen assaults.
The attack on Karku community serves as a poignant example of the broader security crisis affecting Kaduna State and Northern Nigeria, where banditry and kidnapping continue to threaten lives and disrupt peace. As authorities work to address these challenges, the call for prayers and solidarity remains a crucial aspect of community resilience in the face of adversity.
