Fresh Bandit Attack in Zamfara Leaves Three Dead, Properties Destroyed
In a tragic escalation of violence, armed bandits launched a brutal assault on Dangoro village in Zamfara State, resulting in three fatalities and extensive property damage. The incident, which occurred on March 28, 2026, at approximately 10:30 p.m., has heightened tensions in the region as security forces grapple with persistent insecurity.
Details of the Vicious Assault
According to the state police public relations officer, Yazid Abubakar, a group of bandits armed with AK-47 rifles invaded Dangoro village via Nahuche District in Bungudu Local Government Area. The attackers fired sporadically and set numerous houses and silos ablaze, causing severe destruction to homes and food storage facilities. Regrettably, three individuals lost their lives during the attack, including a member of the Community Protection Guard. Additionally, five people sustained gunshot injuries, while four others suffered burn injuries, bringing the total casualties to nine.
Police Response and Ongoing Efforts
Police operatives swiftly engaged the bandits in a gun duel, successfully repelling the assault and forcing the perpetrators to flee into nearby bushes with possible gunshot wounds. The injured victims are currently receiving medical treatment at the Federal Medical Centre in Gusau, as confirmed by Abubakar. The police command has intensified efforts to track down and apprehend those responsible for the attack, with Commissioner of Police Ahmad Muhammad assuring residents of their safety and urging vigilance and cooperation with security agencies.
Broader Context of Banditry in Nigeria
This incident is part of a wider pattern of bandit attacks plaguing northern Nigeria. Recent reports highlight similar tragedies, such as a wedding attack in Kaduna State that left 13 dead and multiple guests abducted. In Niger State, bandits killed sixteen vigilantes and abducted over forty residents, leading to mass displacements. These events underscore the ongoing security crisis, with communities facing repeated violence and property loss despite police interventions.
Residents of Zamfara and neighboring states continue to live in fear as banditry disrupts daily life and economic activities. The police have called for public support in providing credible information to enhance security measures and prevent future attacks.
