Bandits Launch Deadly Raids in Kaduna Community, Killing Six and Abducting Nine
In a devastating series of attacks, bandits have struck the Akwondo community in Kachia Local Government Area of Kaduna State, resulting in the tragic loss of six lives and the abduction of nine individuals, including three children. The incidents, which occurred within hours of each other, have left the community reeling and exposed to further violence.
Initial Attack Claims Six Lives
The violence began when armed bandits invaded the Akwondo community, targeting six residents who were resting under a tree. The attackers opened fire, killing all six before fleeing the scene. This initial assault set the stage for a second, more brazen attack that followed shortly after.
Second Raid Results in Multiple Abductions
According to Garba Tanimu, a member of the community, the bandits returned on Saturday at approximately 10:12 pm. During this second invasion, they abducted six male adults and three children, aged between 12 and 15 years. The bandits, armed with AK-47 rifles, specifically targeted two houses belonging to Muazu Shehu and Bala Ya'u, forcibly dragging the victims into the bush amid sporadic gunfire.
The attackers escaped with their captives through the Maraban Wolijo axis, which connects to Kachia town, highlighting their familiarity with the local terrain and escape routes.
Community Vulnerability Exposed
Tanimu explained that the bandits were able to operate freely during the second attack because they had already eliminated the six young men who typically pursued them to rescue abducted victims. "They felt comfortable enough to return the next day and whisk away more victims without anyone to confront them," he stated, underscoring the community's heightened vulnerability.
Community Leader Confirms Siege Conditions
A community leader, who spoke anonymously, confirmed the abduction of the nine individuals and lamented the ongoing crisis. He revealed that the Akwondo community has been under siege since November of last year, forcing many villagers to abandon their homes and farms out of fear.
"The truth is that the Akwondo community is under siege. Those six young men were the ones who always prevented these bandits from abducting our people, but now that they have been killed, we are vulnerable," the leader said, highlighting the critical role these individuals played in community defense.
Appeal for Security Intervention
The community leader added that contact has yet to be established with the abductors, leaving families in anguish and uncertainty. He made a heartfelt appeal to security agencies to intervene urgently, assist the affected families, and work towards securing the safe release of the victims.
This incident underscores the persistent security challenges facing rural communities in Kaduna State, where banditry and kidnapping continue to disrupt lives and livelihoods, calling for enhanced protective measures and swift action from authorities.
