Cleric Condemns Recruitment of Repentant Bandits and Boko Haram into Nigerian Army
Apostle (Dr.) Benjamin Okon, a prominent cleric, has strongly criticized the reported recruitment of so-called repentant bandits and Boko Haram members into the Nigerian Army, describing it as a perilous move that could exacerbate the nation's security challenges. Okon, who serves as the Deputy Chairman of the Akwa Ibom State Territory and Eket Field Superintendent of The Apostolic Church Nigeria, made these remarks during an interview with The Guardian at the conclusion of the 44th Eket Major Convention, themed "Crucified with Christ" (Galatians 2:20), held at the Eket Field Headquarters.
Security Concerns and Call for Action
According to Apostle Okon, "the worst thing that has happened to the nation's security architecture is the recruitment of so-called repentant bandits into the Nigerian Army." He expressed deep concern that this practice could undermine military integrity and fuel further violence, urging the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to take immediate steps to sanitize the country's security agencies. Specifically, Okon called for the identification and removal of personnel allegedly collaborating with bandits and other criminal elements, emphasizing that such actions are crucial for restoring public trust and enhancing national safety.
