Bandits Kill Scores in New Year Attacks Across Zamfara, Plateau
Deadly Bandit Attacks Hit Zamfara, Plateau Communities

New Year celebrations in parts of Nigeria were brutally shattered by a wave of deadly violence, as bandits launched coordinated attacks in Zamfara and Plateau states, leaving scores feared dead and several others abducted.

Explosions and Abductions Rock Zamfara Communities

The Zamfara State Police Command has confirmed that armed bandits attacked the Maikogo and Mai'ayaya communities. The assailants abducted an unspecified number of villagers after unleashing violence on the areas.

According to police reports, details remain sketchy, but authorities are making frantic efforts to confirm the exact number of people taken. One villager, who spoke anonymously, described a scene of panic. "The attacks were so terrible that people were running into the bush for the safety of their lives, without even caring for their properties," the source revealed.

Convoy Targeted by Triple Explosives

In a separate but related incident, an eyewitness told The Guardian that suspected bandits planted triple explosives along the road between Maikogo and Mai'ayaya. The explosions targeted a convoy accompanied by security personnel traveling to the Dansadau Emirate.

The first blast reportedly destroyed two motorcycles and killed four people. "A second explosion later affected some trailers on the road, leading to the death of about five additional persons," the eyewitness stated. He added that the lengthy convoy was hit towards its rear, and security operatives engaged the attackers in a gun duel, pursuing them into nearby forests.

Plateau New Year Eve Massacre

Simultaneously, the New Year celebration in Plateau State was marred by bloodshed. Armed bandits opened fire on residents of Chugwi Community in the Vwang District of Jos South Local Council around 11:00 p.m. on Wednesday, December 31, 2025.

Rwang Tengwong, the National Publicity Secretary of the Berom Youths Moulder Association (BYM), confirmed the timing, stating the attack occurred just minutes into the New Year as residents prepared to welcome 2026.

As of the time of reporting, seven corpses had been recovered from the debris, with search and rescue efforts ongoing. There are fears the death toll may rise. Local sources indicated the tragedy struck despite earlier security alerts warning that several communities in Jos South Council were earmarked for possible attacks.

The police authorities in Zamfara have assured the public that a detailed statement on the attacks will be issued as investigations continue to ascertain the full cause and impact of the incidents.
