IGP Disu Urges Kwara Communities to Stand Firm Against Bandit Attacks
The Inspector General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has issued a strong appeal to communities in Kwara State, urging them not to abandon their ancestral homes in the face of escalating bandit attacks. During a visit to the state on Monday, March 9, 2026, Disu emphasized that security agencies are fully committed to reclaiming affected areas and restoring peace across the region.
Security Review and Collaborative Efforts
IGP Disu met with security commanders, traditional leaders, and other stakeholders to conduct a thorough review of ongoing operations against criminal groups. He highlighted the importance of open discussions to address security challenges and enhance collaboration between law enforcement and the public. "I want you to know why I am here. I am here to discuss all the issues related to the problem of security in Kwara State," Disu stated during the meeting at the state police command.
He assured residents that the police and other security agencies are dedicated to restoring normalcy in communities impacted by banditry. Disu stressed that residents must resist intimidation and actively cooperate with security personnel by providing timely information to aid in operations.
Police Vow to Reclaim Communities
Drawing from his previous experience supervising police operations in Kwara, Disu noted his familiarity with the terrain and security dynamics, particularly in forest areas where bandits often hide. He explained that these experiences have informed current strategies being deployed to flush out criminal elements. Disu warned against surrendering to bandits under any circumstances, asserting that collective effort between communities and security agencies is the most effective path to reclaiming occupied areas and preventing further attacks.
Background of Insecurity in Kwara State
This appeal comes amid a series of disturbing incidents in Kwara State. Earlier, a video released by terrorists showed approximately 176 residents, mostly women and children, who were abducted during a deadly invasion of Woro community in Kaiama Local Government Area. The abductees were seen pleading for urgent intervention, highlighting the severity of the security crisis.
In another tragic event, gunmen attacked Gidan Sani village near the Kwara State Permanent NYSC Camp under the Tsaragi Emirate on February 9, 2026, resulting in the deaths of a woman and her two children. These incidents underscore the ongoing challenges faced by Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq's administration as it works to combat insecurity in the state.
IGP Disu's visit and assurances aim to bolster community resilience and reinforce the commitment of security forces to protect residents and restore stability in Kwara State.
