Kwara Government Acts Following Security Threat
The Kwara State government has taken a decisive step by ordering the temporary closure of schools across five local government areas. This immediate action comes as a direct response to a recent surge in bandit attacks within the state, which have tragically escalated into violence against civilians.
Deadly Attack Prompts Swift Action
The decision was triggered by a particularly brutal incident on Tuesday, November 18. Armed bandits launched an assault on a Christ Apostolic Church situated in the Eruku community, located within the Ekiti Local Government Area of Kwara State. This violent attack resulted in the deaths of three people. Furthermore, an unspecified number of worshipers were abducted during the raid, heightening fears across the region.
Confirmation of the school closures was provided by Ibraheem Abdullateef, the Senior Special Assistant on Communications to the Kwara State Government. He identified the five affected council areas as:
- Ifelodun
- Ekiti
- Irepodun
- Isin
- Oke Ero
Security Operations and Path to Reopening
Abdullateef clarified that the directive was a necessary precaution stemming from the worrisome security crisis unfolding in these parts of the state. He assured the public that the closure is temporary. The schools will be permitted to reopen as soon as the government receives the necessary security clearance for their safe operation.
In the meantime, he stated that combined security forces have already commenced operations aimed at restoring calm and reinforcing peace and safety in the impacted communities. The government is monitoring the situation closely to ensure a swift return to normalcy.
Emphasizing the government's dual commitment, Abdullateef added, "As much as qualitative learning, we are invested in creating a safer environment for schoolchildren." This statement underscores the priority placed on the physical safety and well-being of students amidst the ongoing security challenges.
