Niger State Governor Discloses Massive Displacement Crisis

Governor Mohammed Umar Bago of Niger State has officially confirmed that no fewer than 500,000 internally displaced persons (IDPs) from the state are currently scattered across multiple regions, including Kebbi, Kwara, Kogi, Kaduna, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), and even the neighboring Benin Republic. The governor made this startling revelation during a presidential initiative event focused on distributing food, nutritional items, and drugs to vulnerable populations affected by the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Borgu Local Council.

Government Efforts for Reunification and Security

Governor Bago emphasized that frantic efforts are being made to ensure the safe and timely return of these displaced individuals to their homes. He explained that the Niger State government, in close collaboration with the Federal Government and various development partners, is working around the clock to accelerate the reunification of IDPs with their immediate families. This coordinated approach aims to address the severe disruptions caused by insecurity and displacement.

In a significant development, Bago also disclosed that President Bola Tinubu has issued a directive to clear and make habitable the National Park in Borgu. This initiative is designed to accommodate security apparatuses, thereby enhancing efforts to combat insecurity in the region and create a safer environment for residents and returnees alike.

Local and Federal Appreciation for Humanitarian Gestures

The Emir of Borgu, Mohammed Sani Haliru Dantoro Kitoro IV, expressed deep appreciation for Governor Bago's efforts, describing him as an exemplary leader who consistently shows concern for his people. The monarch also acknowledged the Federal Government's role and urged citizens to exercise patience as governments at all levels work diligently to ensure their safety and well-being.

Minister of State for Agriculture, Aliyu Sabi Abdullahi, extended gratitude to the Federal Government for its sympathy and support towards the Borgu people, while also recognizing Governor Bago's pivotal efforts in restoring peace to the emirate. Similarly, Borgu Local Council Chairman Abdullahi Mohammed Nasir, Commissioner for Humanitarian Affairs Dr. Ahmed Ibrahim Inga, and the Jikadan Borgu, in their separate remarks, lauded both the federal and state governments for their humanitarian gesture, which they believe will sustainably alleviate the sufferings of the affected population.

Parallel Crisis: Plateau IDPs Appeal to Governor Mutfwang

In a related development, the Displaced People of Bokkos, a coalition of individuals forced from their ancestral lands in Bokkos Local Council of Plateau State by bandits, terrorists, and land grabbers, have issued an urgent appeal to Governor Caleb Mutfwang. In an open letter addressed to the governor, the group lamented their dire conditions, stating they have been reduced to living like destitutes in IDP camps and begging for food.

The letter, signed by coordinators Mangut Alfred, Micah Malo, and David Arandong, expressed deep disappointment that despite repeated promises from the state government to facilitate their return, no concrete actions have been taken. This highlights a broader national challenge of displacement and the urgent need for effective governmental responses to ensure the safety and reintegration of affected communities across Nigeria.
