The Niger State Police Command has successfully recovered 67 livestock that were allegedly rustled by bandits operating in the state. The command's spokesperson, SP Wasiu Abiodun, confirmed the development and provided details of the operation.
Details of the Recovery
According to Abiodun, the recovered animals consisted of 43 cows and 24 sheep. The operation took place on May 14, 2026, at approximately 7:00 p.m., when a joint security team responded to a distress call regarding banditry and cattle rustling along the Mangoro-Idu village axis in Munya Local Council.
Gun Battle and Suspects' Escape
Upon arrival, the security team engaged the suspected hoodlums in a fierce gun battle. During the exchange of fire, the suspects abandoned the rustled livestock and fled the scene to avoid capture. Abiodun noted that no arrests were made at the time, but efforts to track down the perpetrators are ongoing.
Handover to Owners
The recovered animals were subsequently handed over to their rightful owners in collaboration with local government authorities. This joint effort ensures that the livestock is returned to the community, providing some relief to the affected families.
The Niger State Police Command continues to urge the public to provide timely information to help combat banditry and cattle rustling in the region.
