The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has announced that it will no longer post corps members to three local government areas in Kebbi State due to rising insecurity. The decision was made public by the State Coordinator, Bala Dabo Kagarko, during a briefing at the temporary NYSC Orientation Camp in Basura, Jega Local Government Area.
Blacklisted LGAs and Safety Concerns
Kagarko stated that Augie, Arewa, and Sakaba local government areas have been blacklisted for the posting of NYSC members. He emphasized that the move was taken to ensure the safety of corps members deployed to the state. “For the safety of corps members, we are not posting them to Augie, Arewa, and Sakaba local government areas of the state again,” he said.
Camp Relocation Request
The NYSC had previously requested the relocation of its orientation camp from Dakingari to the temporary Basura camp in Jega Local Government Area due to insecurity. Kagarko lamented that the number of corps members posted to Kebbi State has dropped drastically, making it the state with the lowest number of corps members in the country. “We no longer have doctors to post to the state hospitals, not enough corps members to post to schools and other areas where they are needed to contribute to the development of the state,” he added.
Rising Banditry and Insurgent Attacks
Kebbi State has experienced a significant surge in violent banditry and insurgent attacks, particularly following the emergence of the terrorist group Lakurawa. The NYSC has made several appeals to relevant authorities for more corps members but has yet to receive a response.
Previous Suspension of Orientation Exercise
In a related development, the NYSC suspended the 2026 Batch B Stream I orientation programme for prospective corps members deployed to Niger State due to ongoing renovation work at the camp. The renovation was necessitated by damage caused by a windstorm earlier in the year, which affected hostels and other key facilities. Affected corps members were informed that fresh details on reporting dates and locations would be communicated at short notice.
Recent Tragic Incidents
The NYSC also confirmed the tragic death of Corps Member Abdulsamad Jamiu, who lost his life during a military operation on April 26, 2026. Jamiu was serving at Government Junior Secondary School in Nasarawa State. The NYSC expressed deep condolences and pledged to strengthen security measures for all corps members nationwide.
Other recent incidents in Kebbi State include the killing of three FRSC operatives by terrorists, the kidnapping of a businessman and his pregnant wife, an attack on a school that resulted in the death of a principal and vice principal, and the abduction of female students. Troops have also been engaged in gunfights with bandits, with several casualties reported.
