Newlywed NYSC Member Killed in Jos Attack, Leaves Behind Pregnant Wife
A newlywed National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member, Ibrahim Haruna Abdulkareem, was tragically killed in a reprisal attack in Jos, Plateau State, just 48 hours before he was scheduled to complete his service programme. The 31-year-old corps member, who was serving at Almustafa Private School in Jos as his Place of Primary Assignment (PPA), left behind a seven-month pregnant wife and a grieving family.
Details of the Tragic Incident
The attack occurred on Sunday, March 29, 2026, in the Anguwan Rukuba area of Jos, where gunmen stormed the community, resulting in the deaths of several residents. Abdulkareem, who resided in the Yantifa community in Jos North, had returned from his PPA that day and went out around 7:00 p.m. to operate a commercial motorcycle (okada) to supplement his NYSC allowance and support his pregnant wife and family.
His younger brother, Mustafa Haruna Abdulkareem, recounted the harrowing events, stating that between 7:00 and 8:00 p.m., the family heard about the attack and became worried due to the vulnerability of okada riders in such situations. Attempts to reach Abdulkareem were unsuccessful as his phone was unreachable, leading the family to fear the worst.
Family and Community Impact
The family is now grappling with the loss of Abdulkareem, who had become the primary breadwinner after their father's death. His untimely demise has thrown his pregnant wife into a state of distress, as she faces the challenge of raising their unborn child without him. The incident has highlighted the ongoing security challenges in Plateau State, where communal conflicts and violence continue to claim lives.
In response to the attack, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu condemned the violence in Angwan Rukuba and other areas, assuring Nigerians that security agencies are actively working to address the situation and protect citizens. Additionally, the University of Jos (UNIJOS) suspended all examinations scheduled for March 30 and 31, 2026, following the deadly nighttime attack, as authorities liaised with security agencies to ensure student and staff safety.
Broader Context and Reactions
This tragedy underscores the persistent security issues in Nigeria, particularly in regions like Plateau State, where reprisal attacks and communal conflicts have led to numerous casualties. The NYSC programme, designed to foster national unity and development, has been marred by such incidents, raising concerns about the safety of corps members deployed to volatile areas.
The community and nation mourn the loss of Abdulkareem, whose life was cut short just as he was about to embark on a new chapter with his family. His story serves as a poignant reminder of the human cost of insecurity and the urgent need for enhanced security measures to protect vulnerable populations.
