The Plateau State chapter of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders' Association of Nigeria (MACBAN) has issued a strong condemnation following a violent attack on herders and the theft of a large herd of cattle. The incident, which involved armed assailants, has sparked renewed calls for security intervention in the region.
Details of the Ganawuri District Attack
The brazen assault took place on Thursday night, around 11pm, in the Ganawuri District of Riyom Local Council. According to eyewitness accounts, a group of armed individuals, described as allegedly being from Berom militias based in Vom District, Jos South, stormed the herding community. The attackers opened fire on the herders before making off with approximately 102 cows.
MACBAN's Official Statement and Demands
In a statement released on Friday, the Chairman of MACBAN in Plateau State, Alhaji Ibrahim Babayo, expressed deep concern over the recurring violence. He emphasized that as law-abiding citizens, the association has consistently reported such incidents of attacks and cattle rustling to all security agencies operating within the state.
"Unfortunately, attacks on herders and livestock have become a recurring menace in various communities, causing distress and economic hardship," Babayo stated. He urgently called on security forces to assist in recovering the rustled cattle and ensuring that the perpetrators are brought to justice.
Appeal for Government Action
Going beyond the immediate recovery of livestock, the MACBAN chairman appealed to the government to intensify efforts aimed at addressing the root causes of these persistent conflicts. The final part of his statement concluded with a plea for authorities to ensure the safety of lives and property for all residents, highlighting the broader need for sustainable peace and security in Plateau State's communities.
