Fresh Terror Threats Trigger Mass Exodus in Kwara's Oke-Oyan Community

Residents of Oke-Oyan in Ifelodun Local Government Area of Kwara State have initiated a large-scale evacuation from their homes following renewed and explicit threats of massacre by suspected terrorists. The community, gripped by intense fear, is witnessing families hastily abandoning their residences, agricultural lands, and livelihoods in a desperate bid for survival.

Eyewitness Accounts Reveal Dire Situation and Government Distrust

Eyewitness reports and video evidence confirm that the exodus began on the evening of Wednesday, March 25, with villagers relocating to perceived safer zones including Ilorin, the state capital, and Lagos. A resident identified as Musbau described the atmosphere as dire, stating the community has completely lost confidence in governmental protection.

"We have given up on the government. We don't believe this present government is willing to secure us from these terrorists," Musbau lamented. He recounted a recent invasion where gunmen killed residents and issued fresh warnings of a more deadly return. "We reported to the government and the police. No response from the government, and the police already told us the truth that they can't tackle these terrorists. We can't risk staying even for one more night," he added.

Musbau emphasized that the evacuation, though unplanned, is a necessary measure for survival. "People are moving out. Some are going to Ilorin, some are going to Lagos state. This is a sudden relocation... We are leaving our farms and properties. It is better for us to be alive." He further highlighted the broader regional insecurity, noting that Oke-Oyan has become deserted and at least ten other towns in Kwara South face similar fates.

Mass Exodus Follows Deadly Convoy Ambush

The mass departure comes barely twenty-four hours after a deadly attack on a convoy within the same local government area. Sources confirmed that on Tuesday, March 24, two hunters were killed when gunmen ambushed a convoy transporting the remains of three deceased hunters from Oro-Ago to Oke-Oyan.

A local leader, Chief Odofin, explained that the victims were escorting their colleagues' bodies for burial when attackers struck just kilometers from their destination. "The attackers struck as the convoy approached Oke-Oyan, but prompt response from security operatives and local hunters curtailed the situation," he stated. The bodies of the slain hunters were deposited in a mortuary in Oro-Ago, with the convoy later proceeding under security escort.

Series of Violent Incidents Compound Regional Insecurity

This latest ambush adds to a troubling series of violent incidents plaguing Ifelodun Local Government Area, including a recent church invasion where several worshippers were abducted. Furthermore, a separate incident on Monday, March 23, saw a vehicle-triggered explosion rock the Kaiama community in Kwara State, resulting in one fatality and multiple serious injuries.

Eyewitnesses described chaotic scenes as survivors were rushed to nearby hospitals. Community sources indicated the driver perished in the blast, while a passenger survived with severe injuries. These consecutive events underscore the escalating security challenges facing Kwara State, driving communities to desperate measures for their safety.
