Adamawa Government Pledges Support for Border Demarcation Exercise
The Adamawa State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring a peaceful and orderly process as Nigeria and Cameroon prepare for the next phase of their planned border demarcation. Deputy Governor Professor Kaletapwa Farauta gave this assurance on Tuesday when she received the Director General of the National Boundary Commission (NBC), Surveyor Adamu Adaji, in her Yola office.
Professor Farauta emphasized the state government's dedication to supporting the border demarcation process, which is scheduled to move into its physical implementation phase next year. The deputy governor disclosed that residents of communities along the border have already been sensitized about the upcoming exercise and have been urged to cooperate fully with officials from both countries.
National Boundary Commission Completes Mapping Phase
Earlier during the meeting, the NBC Director General revealed that the commission had successfully completed the mapping of boundary areas and is now prepared to begin the physical demarcation next year. Surveyor Adamu Adaji led a delegation to brief the state government on the ongoing preparations for this significant cross-border exercise.
The Director General explained that the visit was aimed at informing the state leadership and ensuring continued collaboration between the federal agency and the state government throughout the demarcation process. This collaborative approach is considered crucial for the success of the international boundary exercise.
Farauta Appointed Chairperson of Border States Forum
In a related development, the States Boundary Committees of frontline states along the Nigeria-Cameroon border have recently appointed Professor Farauta as Chairperson of their forum. The frontline states include Adamawa, Borno, Taraba, Benue, Cross River, and Akwa Ibom.
Professor Farauta emphasized that the forum plays a critical role in strengthening trans-border cooperation between Nigeria and Cameroon. She noted that such collaboration is vital to the security and socioeconomic interests of both nations, particularly for communities living in border areas.
The deputy governor stressed that peaceful border relations are essential for promoting cross-border trade, enhancing security, and fostering socioeconomic development in the region. The demarcation exercise is expected to provide clarity on territorial boundaries while maintaining the cordial relations between the two neighboring countries.
Governor Fintiri Charges Scholarship Recipients to Be Good Ambassadors
In other news from Adamawa State, Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri has urged 100 postgraduate students awarded scholarships to study in Turkey to conduct themselves with discipline and serve as good ambassadors of the state throughout their academic programs.
The governor, represented by his deputy, Professor Kaletapwa Farauta, gave this charge on Monday during a pre-departure orientation held at the Banquet Hall of Government House in Yola. Governor Fintiri reaffirmed his administration's commitment to strengthening the education sector through sustained investment in human capital development.
He advised the beneficiaries to remain focused on their studies and shun any form of misconduct, specifically warning them against associating with individuals who could expose them to drug abuse or compromise their safety. "You should always remember why you are in Turkey and focus on your studies. You are expected to be good ambassadors of the state and your families at all times," the governor emphasized.
Commissioner for Education and Human Capital Development, Dr. Umar Garba Pella, revealed that the scholars were selected from all 21 local government areas under the "Fintiri Win Project" and emerged on merit from over 5,000 applicants. The scholarships cover four key fields: Engineering, ICT, Architecture, and Medical Sciences.
Dr. Pella urged the students to work hard, abide by institutional rules, and make the most of what he described as a life-changing opportunity that will contribute to the development of Adamawa State and Nigeria as a whole.
