Customs Boss Adeniyi Urges Nigerians to Shun Illicit Trade in 2026
NCS Seizes N24.3m Donkey Skins, Urges Against Illicit Trade

As 2026 begins, the Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Bashir Adeniyi, has issued a strong appeal to citizens to reject all forms of illegal commercial activities. The call was part of his New Year message, emphasizing the importance of upholding the law.

A New Year Appeal for Lawful Conduct

In his address, Comptroller-General Adeniyi extended New Year wishes to Nigerians while urging them to be responsible citizens. He specifically cautioned against actions that damage national values and economic stability.

"As we celebrate, let us be law-abiding citizens and avoid all acts that undermine our shared values, including smuggling and other forms of illicit trade," Adeniyi stated. His message underscores the NCS's ongoing commitment to combating illegal cross-border activities that harm the nation's economy and security.

Major Wildlife Seizure in the North-East

Highlighting the practical efforts behind this warning, the NCS Federal Operations Unit (FOU) in Zone D, Bauchi, announced a significant anti-smuggling achievement. Operatives intercepted 718 pieces of donkey skin valued at N24.3 million and arrested two suspects.

The Controller of the zone, Comptroller Abdullahi Shuaibu Kaila, revealed that the seizure occurred on December 26, 2025. The operation took place at the Mobile Area Animal Estate along the Gombe–Garkida road corridor in Mubi, Adamawa State.

Intelligence-Driven Operation and Arrests

Comptroller Kaila explained that the operation was based on actionable intelligence targeting a shipment believed to be destined for illegal export out of Nigeria. The confiscated goods represent a blow against the illegal wildlife trade, which threatens endangered species.

The two arrested suspects include the driver of the intercepted vehicle and the owner of the consignment. Both individuals are currently in Customs custody as investigations continue to uncover the full network behind the illicit operation.

This seizure in Bauchi is a clear demonstration of the NCS's heightened vigilance, particularly in the North-East region. It aligns with the Comptroller-General's message, showing that appeals for lawful conduct are backed by decisive enforcement action on the ground.

The Nigeria Customs Service continues to remind the public that participation in legitimate trade is vital for national growth, while smuggling and illicit trade carry severe legal consequences.
