NIS Suspends Senior Officers Over Extortion Allegations at Lagos-Seme Border
The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has taken decisive action by temporarily removing multiple senior officers from their positions following serious allegations of widespread extortion along the Lagos-Seme Border corridor. This major disciplinary move comes in response to detailed online reports documenting various instances of misconduct by personnel operating at this critical international transit point.
Immediate Suspension and Investigation
Comptroller General of the Service, Kemi Nandap, ordered the immediate suspension of the Comptrollers overseeing the affected commands on Friday, April 11, 2026. In an official statement signed by national spokesman Akinsola Akinlabi, Nandap strongly condemned the reported behavior, describing it as a "direct violation" of the organization's professional standards and core values.
The statement emphasized: "The Comptroller-General unequivocally condemns the actions depicted in these reports. Such conduct is unacceptable and stands in direct violation of the core values, ethics, and operational standards of the Service."
As part of this disciplinary crackdown, the NIS has initiated a formal inquiry to identify every officer involved in the alleged racketeering activities. "The CGI has temporarily relieved the Comptrollers in charge of the affected Commands of their duties and has directed a thorough investigation surrounding these incidents," the agency confirmed.
Border Security Under Scrutiny
The Seme Border serves as a major transit point between Nigeria and the Republic of Benin and has long faced scrutiny regarding the conduct of various security agencies operating in the area. The NIS has now pledged to reform its internal monitoring systems to restore public confidence and its institutional reputation.
Comptroller General Nandap assured that "The Service remains committed to delivering professional, transparent, and efficient services at all points of entry and exit. It will not condone any act that undermines public trust or tarnishes the integrity of the Service."

Following the officer reshuffle, the NIS has called on the public to assist in its "mission to serve with integrity" by reporting any further abuses of power.
