CAN Appeals for Aid to Taraba IDPs, Condemns Violence in Easter Message
The Taraba State chapter of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has issued a heartfelt appeal for urgent assistance to internally displaced persons (IDPs) affected by persistent crises in the region. In an Easter message released on Sunday, the state chairman, Very Rev. Fr. Dr. Williams Peter Awoshiri, called upon Nigerians to demonstrate compassion and generosity during this season of renewal.
Urgent Call for Support
Awoshiri emphasized that the spirit of Easter, which centers on love and compassion, should inspire individuals, faith-based organizations, and corporate bodies to provide essential relief materials to vulnerable populations. He highlighted the dire needs of IDPs, urging donations of food, medicine, clothing, bedding, shelter materials, and other basic necessities. According to him, such acts of kindness reflect the Christian obligation to care for the needy and uphold human dignity in times of crisis.
Concerns Over Violence
The association expressed deep concern over the ongoing violence in southern Taraba, particularly in Takum and Donga local government areas. CAN condemned the killings and destruction of property, describing the situation as tragic and unacceptable. Awoshiri warned that meaningful development cannot thrive in an environment marked by fear and instability, calling for an immediate end to violence, retaliation, and lawlessness. He stressed the importance of dialogue, justice, and peaceful coexistence among communities as essential pathways to achieving lasting peace and security.
Commendations and Recommendations
While acknowledging the efforts of government authorities, security agencies, and local vigilante groups, Awoshiri urged the adoption of more proactive and sustained strategies to restore peace in affected areas. He extended condolences to families who have lost loved ones in the crises and offered prayers for the injured, seeking their quick recovery. The CAN chairman also highlighted the significance of Easter as the cornerstone of the Christian faith, symbolizing hope, renewal, and victory over despair, and called on Nigerians to embrace unity, tolerance, and mutual respect.
Hope for the Future
Despite the ongoing challenges, Awoshiri expressed optimism that peace would return to Taraba State. He noted that the message of Easter offers hope for healing, restoration, and progress, encouraging all stakeholders to work collaboratively towards a peaceful resolution. This appeal underscores CAN's commitment to humanitarian support and conflict resolution in the region, aiming to foster a safer and more stable environment for all residents.
