Deadly Protests Erupt in South Africa Over Igbo King Coronation

Chaos and violence have broken out in South Africa after the coronation of an Igbo traditional ruler sparked intense protests in the Eastern Cape province. The installation of Chief Solomon Ogbonna Eziko as Eze Ndigbo, a title representing the leader of the Igbo community, has led to deadly clashes, with reports of vehicles set ablaze and shops looted.

Coronation Sparks Widespread Anger

The crisis began when Chief Eziko was crowned, a move that angered various political groups, traditional leaders, and local residents. They argued that the coronation violated provincial laws and undermined South Africa's recognized traditional leadership system. On Monday, March 30, 2026, members of ActionSA and other protesters marched to express their discontent, but what started as a peaceful demonstration quickly escalated into violence in KuGompo City.

According to reports, several vehicles were torched, and shops believed to belong to foreign nationals were targeted and looted. Videos shared on social media platform X showed burning cars and damaged buildings as police struggled to control the situation and disperse the crowds.

Violence Escalates with Stabbing Incident

The unrest intensified following a stabbing incident allegedly involving Ethiopian shop owners. At least two individuals were hospitalized due to injuries sustained during the chaos, while numerous vehicles were destroyed in the turmoil. The protests have highlighted deep-seated tensions over cultural and legal recognition within the region.

Political Backing for Traditional Leaders

Meanwhile, Athol Trollip, the Eastern Cape chair of ActionSA, stated that the party fully supports recognized traditional leaders in rejecting the installation of a Nigerian Igbo king in East London. He described the coronation as illegal and contrary to South Africa's traditional leadership framework. Earlier in the day, protesters had marched through parts of the province, urging the government to take swift action and warning that failure to respond could lead to further violence.

The situation remains volatile, with authorities on high alert to prevent additional outbreaks. The incident underscores ongoing challenges related to immigration, cultural integration, and governance in South Africa.
