Tragic Death of LASUED Student in Lagos Communal Violence Sparks Outcry
A student of the Lagos State University of Education (LASUED), Akinyemi Omo Akin, has been confirmed dead following a violent communal clash between the Oto-Awori and Ijanikin communities in Lagos. The tragic incident occurred on Saturday, February 28, 2026, resulting in at least three other individuals sustaining varying degrees of injuries during the unrest.
Violence Disrupts Lagos-Badagry Expressway
The immediate cause of Saturday's violence remains unclear, but the clash led to significant disruption along the Lagos–Badagry Expressway. The Otto–Ijanikin axis was blocked by the warring groups, causing heavy traffic and hindering movement for motorists and other road users. Both communities are known to share a long history of hostility, which has periodically erupted into violent confrontations.
Police Deny Responsibility Amid Eyewitness Allegations
In a statement issued on Saturday, the Lagos State Police Command, through its spokesperson Abimbola Adebisi, confirmed the death of Omo Akin but firmly denied that police personnel were responsible for the fatal shooting. However, eyewitnesses and community sources have alleged that the deceased died from a stray bullet reportedly fired by police officers who intervened in the clash.
The police statement detailed that during the clash between the two youth groups, Omo Akin was suspected to have been shot and later died in the hospital. The Commissioner of Police has directed a full-scale investigation, to be led by the Deputy Commissioner of Police at the State Criminal Investigation Department in Panti. Additionally, seven suspects from both communities have been arrested and are in police custody, with voluntary statements already obtained regarding their roles in the incident.
NANS Criticizes Police and Demands Transparency
The Lagos State chapter of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), through its Joint Campus Council, has mourned the death of the student and strongly criticized the position of the Lagos State Police Command. In a statement made available on Sunday, the student body expressed concern over the police's categorical denial of responsibility without presenting forensic evidence.
Ridwan Ajayi, the Public Relations Officer of the NANS Joint Campus Council in Lagos, described the incident as a tragic loss, stating, "This is a devastating loss not only to the LASUED community but also to the entire student population of Lagos State." The NANS statement highlighted the need for transparency, noting the absence of ballistic clarification in the preliminary report and questioning whether live rounds were discharged by officers at the scene.
Demands for Independent Investigation and Safety Measures
NANS Lagos has demanded a transparent and independent forensic investigation, including ballistic analysis to determine the true source of the bullet, and a public briefing of findings once investigations are concluded. The student body emphasized that public confidence depends on openness, facts, and independent verification, rather than assumptions.
In addition to the investigation, NANS called for immediate engagement between security agencies and LASUED management to strengthen safety protocols around student residential areas. The association also demanded adequate compensation and support for the family of the deceased pending the outcome of investigations, as well as the deployment of neutral and professional security personnel to prevent further escalation. Students of LASUED and youths across Lagos State were urged to remain calm and law-abiding during this period.
Police Response and Ongoing Investigation
The police spokesperson reiterated that from preliminary investigations, it is incorrect and untrue that the deceased died from a stray bullet fired by the police. According to the command, before police intervention and arrival at the scene, there were reports from members of the public that both sides had mobilized cultists who were shooting and engaging in a gun duel. The victim may have been shot during this exchange.
To sustain peace and forestall any further breakdown of law and order, the police have carried out a massive deployment of personnel to the affected areas. The command assured that investigations are ongoing to determine the full circumstances surrounding the clash and the death of Akinyemi Omo Akin.
