In a significant move to address the pressing issue of gender-based violence, traditional rulers in Ogun State have taken a proactive stance by sensitizing communities on the importance of protecting women and girls. The initiative, spearheaded by prominent monarchs, aims to foster a culture of respect and safety within families and the broader society.
Men-Only Town Hall Meeting Highlights Leadership and Responsibility
The Olu of Ilaro and Paramount Ruler of Yewaland, Oba Kehinde Olugbenle, has issued a compelling call to action, urging men to embrace greater responsibility in promoting peace and safeguarding the rights of women and girls. This appeal was made during the fifth men-only town hall meeting, which was convened at his palace in Ilaro, Ogun State. The gathering attracted a diverse array of participants, including traditional and religious leaders, political party representatives, and advocates from civil society organizations.
Oba Olugbenle emphasized that men must exemplify leadership through qualities such as patience, discipline, and unwavering respect for women and children. He underscored that the overall wellbeing of society is intrinsically linked to how women and girls are treated. "Our cultural heritage places immense responsibility on men as the leaders of families and the custodians of our traditions. It is imperative that we reject all forms of violence and injustice against women and girls. True strength is demonstrated through protection, support, and empowerment," he asserted.

During the event, the Otun Aguro of Ilaro, Ayorinde Dawotola, reinforced the notion that protecting women and girls is a collective duty. Akapo Sewanu, Chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in Yewa South, called for enhanced collaboration among religious and community institutions. He advocated for concerted efforts to mentor young men towards responsible behavior, thereby addressing root causes of gender-based violence.

Olumide Omosebi, Chief Executive Officer of GNOSIS Help Initiative, provided data-driven insights, citing statistics that reveal many girls experience abuse. He linked this troubling trend to factors such as absent fathers and a lack of accountability within communities. Omosebi urged men to speak out against violence and actively support initiatives aimed at bringing perpetrators to justice, emphasizing the importance of community involvement in legal and social frameworks.
