Senator Condemns Ozoro Festival Attack, Demands Justice for Victims
Senator Joel-Onowakpo Thomas, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Local Content and representative of Delta South, has issued a forceful condemnation of the reported attack on women and girls during a festival in Oramudu Community, Ozoro Kingdom, located in the Isoko North Local Government Area of Delta State. In a statement personally signed on Monday, following his visit to His Royal Majesty, Anthony Ogbogbo Ibuka I, the Ovie of Ozoro Kingdom, the lawmaker described the incident as "criminal, barbaric, and an egregious violation of human dignity," urging for immediate justice and enhanced protection for women's rights.
Defending Isoko Traditions
Expressing deep concern over the development, Senator Thomas emphasized that such acts do not align with the values or traditions of the Isoko people. "As an Isoko man, I feel deeply pained by the misrepresentation of our people and our traditions. Let me make this absolutely clear: there is no such thing as a 'rape festival' in Ozoro Kingdom or anywhere in Isoko land," he stated. "Our culture is rooted in peace, respect, and the protection of human dignity, especially for women. What transpired in Oramudu Community was not a reflection of our heritage but the actions of a few criminal elements."
Call for Thorough Investigation
The senator commended the swift response from the Ozoro community, including the President General, local vigilante groups, and the Nigeria Police Force, for rescuing victims and restoring order. However, he urged law enforcement authorities to conduct a thorough and transparent investigation, insisting that all those responsible must be brought to justice. "Everyone must be seen to be served. This is non-negotiable," he asserted.
Strengthening Safety Measures
Thomas further called on community leaders and cultural custodians to reinforce safety measures during festivals and public gatherings to prevent any recurrence. "All forms of sexual assault, molestation, harassment, and any actions that inflict harm or trauma on women are utterly unacceptable and must be condemned in the strongest terms. Our tradition forbids such behavior, and no girl or woman should ever again be exposed to such humiliation," he added.
Appeal for Calm and Collaboration
He also appealed for calm among residents of Ozoro Kingdom and the wider Isoko nation, assuring that he would collaborate with stakeholders and security agencies to ensure justice is served and preventive mechanisms are implemented. "Together, we will uphold the values that make Ozoro Kingdom a beacon of peace, culture, and progress," he concluded.
