Police Response and Security Measures

The spokesperson for the Cross River State Police Command, ASP Sunday Eitokpah, confirmed that police operatives, in collaboration with the Village Community Relations Unit (VCRU), have been deployed to the area to prevent any further breakdown of law and order. He stated that efforts are ongoing to identify and apprehend those responsible for the attack.

ASP Eitokpah urged restraint among the affected communities and assured residents that adequate security measures are being implemented to maintain peace in the area. The police emphasized their commitment to ensuring the safety of all citizens.

Background of Communal Tensions

This incident is the latest in a series of violent clashes and security concerns that have threatened peace in parts of the Cross River central senatorial district. It comes amid renewed concerns over the fragile peace between the neighboring Ugep and Idomi communities, which have experienced periodic tensions in recent months.

In response to the ongoing unrest, the Yakurr Local Council recently convened a peace meeting involving community leaders, traditional rulers, security agencies, and other stakeholders. The meeting aimed to prevent further hostilities and strengthen peaceful coexistence.

During the meeting, both communities reportedly adopted a series of resolutions focused on promoting lasting peace and stability. These include a commitment to identify and sanction individuals found spreading false, misleading, or unverified information capable of triggering violence.
