OGWAMA Cracks Down on Illegal Waste Dumping with Prosecution of 108 Offenders in Ogun
The Ogun State Waste Management Authority (OGWAMA) has taken a firm stance against environmental violations by arresting and prosecuting 108 waste offenders in Abeokuta. These individuals were caught engaging in the indiscriminate dumping of refuse across the state capital, an act strictly prohibited under Ogun State's waste management legislation.
Enforcement Actions and Legal Consequences
OGWAMA's enforcement team conducted operations at various locations, apprehending violators who were discarding waste on roadsides, public spaces, and road medians. In response to these incidents, the offenders were brought before customary courts in Abeokuta, where they faced prosecution and were fined. This measure aims to serve as a deterrent to others who might consider similar unlawful disposal practices.
Farook Adeniyi Akintunde, the Special Adviser to the Governor on OGWAMA, expressed disappointment at the necessity of such actions. "It is unfortunate that we have to go this route to stop some of our people from dumping waste indiscriminately on roadsides and in public places," Akintunde stated. He emphasized that despite the government's initiatives to enhance waste collection through door-to-door services provided by accredited Private Sector Participants (PSPs), some residents continue to flout the rules.
Government Efforts and Public Compliance
Akintunde highlighted that OGWAMA has undertaken extensive sensitization campaigns, appeals, and encouragement for residents to utilize PSP operators for proper waste disposal. "We have sensitised, appealed and even encouraged residents to hand over their waste to the PSP operators assigned to their areas for proper disposal, but to no avail," he added. The authority is committed to sustaining enforcement exercises until full compliance with environmental regulations is achieved, particularly as the state witnesses improvements in waste management infrastructure.
"We are determined to sustain this exercise until people see the need to stop dumping waste indiscriminately, especially now that the state is wearing a new look in terms of proper waste management," Akintunde asserted. He issued a stern warning about the environmental risks associated with illegal dumping, especially during the rainy season, noting that it can lead to flooding and groundwater contamination.
Call to Action and Future Measures
Residents are urged to cease illegal dumping activities immediately or face legal consequences. "Anyone still dumping waste on roadsides and medians should stop immediately or prepare to face the law, because OGWAMA will not fold its hands and allow a few individuals to deface the environment," Akintunde warned. The authority's proactive approach underscores its dedication to maintaining a clean and safe environment in Ogun State, with continued vigilance expected to curb further violations.
