Tragic Boat Capsize in Kebbi Claims 14 Lives at Wedding Celebration

A devastating boat accident in Kebbi State has resulted in the tragic drowning of 14 individuals, casting a shadow over what should have been a joyous wedding celebration. The incident occurred in the Yauri Local Government Area, specifically at Gumbi village in Gumbi Ward, on Friday, February 13, 2026.

Details of the Fatal Incident

The boat was transporting more than 100 passengers, all of whom were wedding guests returning home after accompanying a bride to her husband's residence in Gwarzo village, located in the Ngaski Local Government Area. According to reports from Channels TV, the vessel overturned during the journey, throwing all occupants into the water.

The victims included 13 women and one child, highlighting the profound impact on families and the local community. Emergency services and local residents responded swiftly, but the rapid capsizing led to this significant loss of life.

Official Response and Condolences

In the wake of the tragedy, Kebbi State Governor Nasir Idris expressed his deep condolences. He attended the funeral prayer for the deceased on Saturday, demonstrating solidarity with the affected families. The governor was represented by Abubakar Shu'aibu, the Chairman of Yauri Local Government, who conveyed the governor's message of sympathy to the immediate families, the local government, the emirate, and the broader Yauri community.

During his address, Governor Idris urged the grieving families and community members to accept the incident in good faith. "I appeal to you to accept this in good faith, bearing in mind that nothing happens without the knowledge of our Creator. God does what He wants at the time He wants, and nobody has the right to question Him," he stated, offering spiritual comfort during this difficult time.

The governor also offered prayers, asking God to forgive the shortcomings of the deceased and grant them Jannatul Firdaus, reflecting the Islamic faith of the victims and the community.

Aftermath and Burial Rites

Following the accident, all 14 victims have been laid to rest in accordance with Islamic rites, ensuring their burial was conducted with proper religious observances. This process has provided some closure to the families, though the emotional scars from such a sudden and tragic event are likely to persist.

The capsizing underscores ongoing concerns about water transportation safety in the region, particularly during communal events like weddings where large groups may travel together. Local authorities are expected to review safety protocols to prevent similar incidents in the future, as communities mourn the loss of their loved ones.
