The Allied People's Movement (APM) has won every chairmanship seat in Monday's local government council elections in Bauchi State, according to results announced by the Bauchi State Independent Electoral Commission (BASIEC). The party also secured 319 councillorship seats out of 323, with the remaining four going to other parties.
BASIEC Announces Landslide Victory for APM
Jummai Abubakar, the Chairperson of BASIEC, revealed the results late Monday night. She confirmed that APM candidates triumphed in all 20 local government areas across the state. In the councillorship contests, the Social Democratic Party (SDP), National Rescue Movement (NRM), Zenith Labour Party (ZLP), and Young Progressives Party (YPP) each claimed one seat.
Abubakar assured residents that the electoral process was conducted independently. She stated that all declared winners had met the legal requirements for victory by obtaining the highest number of valid votes in their respective constituencies, as reported by Channels TV.
Opposition Boycott Overshadows the Vote
The results came a day after the Coalition of Opposition Parties in Bauchi State announced its withdrawal from the election. The coalition accused organisers of designing the exercise to benefit the ruling APM and urged its members not to participate.
Governor Bala Mohammed dismissed these claims shortly after casting his own vote, describing the electoral process as peaceful. He said the withdrawal of opposition parties did not affect the validity or legitimacy of the outcome.
Work-Free Day Facilitates Participation
The Bauchi State Government had declared Monday a work-free day across the state. This allowed civil servants and other public workers, including those at the local government, state, and federal levels, as well as banking sector employees, to participate in the election.
The APM's sweeping victory consolidates its control over local government administration in Bauchi State, with the opposition's boycott failing to alter the final outcome.
