In a significant enforcement action, operatives of the Ogun State Police Command have apprehended no fewer than 15 traders for allegedly violating environmental regulations and causing traffic obstruction along the Abekoko and Old Bank axis of the Abeokuta-Lagos Expressway. The arrests were made as part of the ongoing "Operation No Traffic Gridlock" initiative, aimed at ensuring free flow of traffic and maintaining public order across the state.
Details of the Enforcement Operation
According to Police Public Relations Officer Oluseyi Babaseyi, who confirmed the incident in a statement issued in Abeokuta, the operation targeted the illegal display of wares and makeshift structures that have been contributing to severe traffic gridlock and environmental degradation. Babaseyi emphasized that the exercise was conducted to dismantle obstructions and restore order on the busy highway.
During the enforcement, several items obstructing the expressway were removed, including:
- Planks and shanties that had been erected illegally.
- Wares and goods displayed by traders in unauthorized areas.
- Over six trucks deployed to evacuate the demolished structures and materials.
The police spokesperson stated that the 15 individuals arrested had defied lawful directives and violated environmental laws. They are set to be charged to court upon the completion of investigations, as part of efforts to deter future violations.
Police Leadership Commends Officers and Issues Warning
Commissioner of Police CP Bode Ojajuni praised the officers involved for their professionalism during the operation. He reaffirmed the command's dedication to upholding traffic and environmental regulations, warning that any individual found blocking roads or engaging in similar offenses would face legal consequences.
CP Ojajuni also urged members of the public, particularly traders and drivers, to adhere to the rules for safety reasons. He highlighted the importance of compliance to prevent accidents, reduce environmental pollution, and ensure smooth vehicular movement on major highways like the Abeokuta-Lagos Expressway.
