Tragic End for 9/11 Survivor
A man who miraculously survived the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks has met a violent end at the hands of three teenagers in Florida. Roger Borkum, 64, was brutally beaten to death in what authorities describe as a senseless attack.
Brutal Attack Details Emerge
The horrific incident occurred on October 19 in Downtown Jacksonville. According to arrest reports from the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office, Borkum was found severely beaten just before midnight with blood pooled around his head and a blood trail extending down the sidewalk.
Witnesses reported seeing three teens kicking and stomping on the victim. The attackers were seen rummaging through Borkum's backpack and returned approximately 20 minutes later to kick him multiple additional times.
The three suspects identified as Justin Curry (13), Marcavion Lacey (19), and Robert Pope (17) were arrested within hours of the attack. Shockingly, Curry was only 12 years old at the time of the violent assault.
Victim's Tragic Life Story
Roger Borkum's life was marked by previous tragedies. The Long Island native had worked as a consultant on the 77th floor of Tower 1 at the World Trade Center but was let go in July 2001 - just over two months before the 9/11 attacks that claimed nearly 3,000 lives.
His wife, Celeste Borkum, was killed during a humanitarian visit to Africa in 2009. At the time of his death, Borkum was homeless and living as a widower.
The suspects allegedly told investigators they attacked Borkum because he had dissed their dead homies, though they provided no elaboration on what prompted the violent confrontation with the complete stranger.
Borkum succumbed to his injuries four days after the attack on October 23. All three suspects were indicted for murder on November 20 and now face serious criminal charges for taking the life of a man who had already cheated death once.
